This position offers an opportunity for a qualified electrician to join the engineering and maintenance team at Groote Schuur Hospital in Observatory, Cape Town. As an Artisan Production Grade A to C, the successful candidate will be responsible for the full range of electrical services required to keep a large, complex healthcare facility operating safely and efficiently. The role is graded according to the Production scale, with entry-level appointments at Grade A, while more experienced candidates may be considered for Grade B or Grade C based on the number of years of relevant practice after obtaining their trade certificate.
To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate in electrical work. For Grade A, no prior experience is required, making this an excellent entry point for newly qualified artisans. Grade B requires at least 18 years of recognised experience in the electrical field after the trade test, and Grade C requires at least 34 years of such experience. Beyond the formal qualification, the job demands a valid Code B or EB driver’s licence, as well as a willingness to perform standby duties and work overtime when needed. The ideal candidate will be computer literate, able to learn and follow in-house systems and procedures, and possess strong verbal and written communication skills. A sound knowledge of high-tension electrical systems is essential, as is a working understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 and its regulations.
The core duties involve checking, maintaining, installing and repairing hospital electrical equipment, and responding promptly to emergency electrical failures or problems. The artisan will also supervise the work schedule for the division, assist in supervising and training staff, and take responsibility for the administrative functions of the workshop. This includes rendering assistance to the Artisan Foreman with all divisional functions, including administrative work, and providing feedback to supervisors on service and maintenance issues. Control over tools and materials is another key responsibility, ensuring that resources are used efficiently and accounted for properly.
This is a permanent post within the Western Cape Department of Health, based at one of the province’s major teaching hospitals. The work is varied and essential, supporting critical medical services in a busy environment. Applicants should note that no payment of any kind is required when applying for this vacancy. For further details, the contact person and telephone number are provided in the circular. This is an excellent opportunity for both emerging and seasoned electricians to contribute to public healthcare infrastructure.
