This position offers an opportunity to work as a Farm Aid at the Tygerhoek Research Farm in Riviersonderend, within the Western Cape Department of Agriculture. The role is based in a working research environment where agricultural trials and crop production are carried out to support the department’s broader scientific and farming objectives. As a Farm Aid, you will be part of a team responsible for the hands-on maintenance and management of research plots, livestock water supply, and farm infrastructure. The work is physically demanding and requires a reliable, observant individual who can follow technical instructions closely and adapt to the changing needs of a working farm.
To be considered, candidates need an ABET Level 2 certificate or an equivalent qualification. Beyond the formal requirement, the role calls for practical knowledge of protein and grain crops, as well as the ability to distinguish between crops and weeds. You should be comfortable working under pressure and capable of performing hard manual labour in an outdoor setting. Good written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with the ability to detect changes and variations in crops or conditions. A basic understanding of trial plans is also required, as the work supports agricultural research activities where precision and consistency matter.
The duties are varied and cover the full cycle of crop production and farm maintenance. You will take soil samples, irrigate and plant crops, and carry out soil cultivation and preparation tasks such as cleaning and houghing. Chemical crop protection is part of the job, including operating a knapsack sprayer. You will also be involved in reaping, grading, weighing, packing, and storing seed and plant material. Daily tending of crops includes weeding and cutting, and you will assist with harvesting. Other responsibilities include asset control and safe keeping of farm equipment, cleaning facilities, disposing of farm waste, and providing water supply for livestock and farm buildings. You will care for equipment through cleaning, oiling, and sharpening, and take part in firefighting and prevention activities. The role also involves opening springs and troughs, unblocking drains, and loading or off-loading materials.
Shortlisted applicants should note that the selection process includes interviews, vetting and supporting documentation, and two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise to test technical and generic suitability, and one integrity assessment. Reference checks will be conducted with previous employers, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. The department’s employment equity targets will guide the selection process, and all applications must be submitted online before the closing date. This is a physically active, entry-level farm services post suited to individuals who enjoy outdoor work and want to contribute to agricultural research in the Western Cape.
