The Government Printing Works (GPW) invites qualifying graduates to apply for a 24-month graduate internship position under the banner of Service Maintenance, based at its Pretoria premises. This role forms part of the broader Graduate Programme for the 2027/2029 financial year, which is specifically designed to bridge the gap between academic study and practical workplace experience. As an intern in the service maintenance stream, the successful candidate will be placed within a technical environment where they will receive structured, on-the-job exposure and training directly relevant to their electrical engineering background. The placement is intended to develop practical competencies in the maintenance, servicing, and upkeep of heavy current electrical systems, equipping the intern with the kind of professional experience that is vital for a sustained career in the public sector or industry at large.
To be considered for this opportunity, applicants must hold a National Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Heavy Current. Additionally, candidates must be South African citizens and currently unemployed. It is also a strict requirement that applicants have not previously participated in any internship programme. This condition is taken very seriously; failure to disclose any prior internship participation will result in the immediate termination of the contract on the grounds of dishonesty or undue enrichment. In terms of the selection process, shortlisted candidates will need to be available for interviews at a date and time determined by GPW, and personnel suitability checks will be conducted as part of the vetting process. Applicants who possess foreign qualifications must submit an evaluation from the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). All successful candidates will be required to enter into an employment contract and a performance agreement, where applicable.
The core duties of the intern revolve around active participation in workplace activities, projects, and capacity-building initiatives under the supervision of experienced professionals. The intern will be expected to engage with the practical realities of electrical service maintenance, contributing to the daily functions of the unit while learning how to diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy current equipment. This is not a passive observation post; the programme requires interns to take initiative, collaborate with teams, and demonstrate a willingness to learn from mentors. The internship also offers exposure to the broader operational context of the Government Printing Works, a key state entity responsible for producing official documents and securing government communications. Throughout the 24-month period, the intern will build a portfolio of practical experience that aligns with their field of studyaine. All applicants are reminded that this is a structured graduate programme with strict compliance expectations, and only those who fully meet the eligibility criteria and submit the required documentation will be considered.
