This is a 24-month graduate internship placement within the Communications unit of the Government Printing Works (GPW), based in Pretoria. The programme is designed to give unemployed South African graduates meaningful workplace exposure and practical training in the communications field, in line with the organisation’s broader Graduate Programme for the 2027/2029 financial year. As an intern, you will be placed within the communications environment, where you will work under the supervision of experienced professionals and gain hands-on experience that complements your academic background. The role is ideal for a recent graduate who is eager to develop practical skills in a government context, particularly in areas such as corporate communication, marketing support, media liaison, and internal or external stakeholder engagement.
To be considered for this post, applicants must hold a National Diploma or Degree in Communication, Marketing, or Media Studies. This is an entry-level internship, so no prior work experience is required, but a strong academic record and a genuine interest in government communications will be an advantage. Applicants must be South African citizens, must be currently unemployed, and must not have previously participated in any internship programme. Importantly, failure to disclose prior internship participation will result in the immediate termination of the contract on grounds of dishonesty. Candidates with foreign qualifications must have their qualifications evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) before applying.
The core duties involve active participation in workplace activities, projects, and capacity-building initiatives within the communications placement area. Interns are expected to engage fully with the structured training and work exposure provided, contributing to real tasks while learning how a large state-owned entity manages its public communications. This includes supporting the communications team with day-to-day functions, assisting with the preparation of communication materials, and gaining exposure to the broader administrative and operational processes of the Government Printing Works. The programme is aimed at bridging the gap between academic study and professional practice, so interns will be expected to show initiative, willingness to learn, and the ability to work collaboratively.
Applicants should take careful note of the application conditions. A completed and signed new Z83 application form must be submitted for each post, and the correct job title and reference number must appear in the email subject line. Only shortlisted candidates will need to submit certified copies of qualifications and other documents, and these must be produced by the day of the interview. Applications that are late, incomplete, or submitted using the old Z83 form will not be considered, and the department does not accept applications via fax. Correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates, and if you have not received a response within three months of the closing date, you should consider your application unsuccessful. The Government Printing Works reserves the right not to fill the post. Successful candidates will be required to enter into an employment contract and performance agreement, and personnel suitability checks will form part of the selection process. By applying, you consent to the processing of your personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). This is an excellent opportunity for a communications graduate to start a public service career with structured mentorship and practical experience.
