The Regional Coordinator position is a contract-based role within the National Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, based in Pretoria. This post sits within the department’s environmental management and waste tyre regulatory framework, focusing on the operational oversight of waste tyre collection, transportation, and processing. The incumbent will act as a central link between the department, depot operators, transporters, and secondary industry applicants, ensuring that waste tyre management activities are carried out in line with relevant legislation and departmental policies. It is a hands-on coordination role that requires regular site visits, monitoring of collection points, and the compilation of various compliance and monitoring reports.
To be considered, applicants must hold a National Diploma at NQF level 6 or higher in Transport Management, Logistics, Environmental Management, Environmental Sciences, or a related and SAQA-recognised equivalent qualification. A minimum of two years of experience in environmental management or a directly relevant field is required. The role demands a solid understanding of project management, general and financial administration, departmental procedures and policies, as well as depot operations, waste management processes, and logistics. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to develop, interpret, and apply policies, strategies, and legislation, along with sound organising, planning, coordination, and communication skills. Computer literacy, report writing, and the ability to work under pressure are essential, as are good interpersonal relations and the willingness to work long hours voluntarily when needed. The department also values independence, responsibility, loyalty, honesty, and reliability. Possession of a valid driver’s licence is an added advantage given the travel and site visit requirements.
The core duties revolve around improving waste tyre collection and transportation services. This includes compiling monitoring reports, updating collection schedules, and conducting quarterly monitoring of allocated collection points. The coordinator must keep accurate files and records of all monitored participants, receive and resolve queries and complaints, and ensure that participants comply with relevant legislation. Site visits to collection points, depots, and processors are required, along with compliance promotion activities and the compilation of compliance reports. The role also involves following up on recommendations and comments, verifying signed Service Level Agreements, and consolidating monthly reports from depot operators. The coordinator plans and arranges compliance sessions with transporters and facilitates the payment process for transporters and depot operators. This includes verifying and capturing collection notes and monthly reports on a weekly and monthly basis, receiving invoices with supporting documents, verifying and submitting invoice spreadsheets, and loading all relevant documentation onto the Electronic Document Management System (EDMS).
In addition, the role contributes to increasing the processing of collected waste tyres. This involves receiving and processing secondary industry applications, verifying applications within two weeks of receipt, conducting pre-approval inspections, and compiling inspection reports within two days after site assessments. The coordinator provides feedback to applicants on the status of their applications, maintains database records, receives monthly tonnage reports from secondary industry processors, loads these reports onto EDMS, and keeps proper files. Finally, the coordinator must report to managers on progress and maintain verification records. This position offers an opportunity to play a key operational role in South Africa’s environmental waste management efforts, with the department being an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer. Preference may be given to appointable applicants from underrepresented designated groups, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Shortlisted candidates should note that they will be subject to security vetting and suitability screening, including qualifications verification and reference checks.
