ARTISAN PRODUCTION GRADE A TO C (BUILDING AND CIVILS)

This position offers an opportunity for a qualified building and civil trades professional to join the Building and Civil Engineering Division at Groote Schuur Hospital in Observatory. The role is graded as an artisan production post from Grade A through to Grade C, which allows for career progression based on relevant post-trade experience. The incumbent will be responsible for the ongoing maintenance, repair, and installation of buildings, civil infrastructure, and related equipment under the control of the division. This is a hands-on, technical role set within a busy hospital environment, where the condition of physical infrastructure directly supports patient care and staff operations.

To be considered, applicants must possess an appropriate Trade Test Certificate in a Building and Civil Trade, such as bricklaying, tiling, or drywalling. Entry at Grade A requires no prior experience after certification, while Grade B requires at least eighteen years of appropriate and recognised experience in the trade, and Grade C requires at least thirty-four years of such experience. A valid driver’s licence is an inherent requirement of the job. The ideal candidate will have sound knowledge of building maintenance and repair, the ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications, and practical computer literacy in Microsoft Office applications. Additional competencies include compiling basic specifications and maintenance reports, good communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to plan, prioritise, and coordinate maintenance projects. Knowledge of the building and civil maintenance environment is essential.

The core duties involve providing maintenance, repair, and installation services across the hospital’s buildings and civil infrastructure. The artisan will inspect, diagnose, and rectify faults within the scope of the relevant trade, and assist with the planning and execution of building maintenance projects and minor capital works. The role also requires managing and monitoring contractors and service providers to ensure compliance with specifications, quality standards, and safety requirements. Close liaison with engineering management, hospital departments, contractors, and suppliers is expected to keep maintenance activities aligned with operational needs. The position also calls for evaluating and advising on the suitability, maintenance requirements, repair costs, and replacement of infrastructure and equipment. Administrative responsibilities include completing and maintaining job cards, maintenance records, reports, and other documentation, as well as assisting with the control of workshop tools, materials, consumables, and stock. Adherence to Occupational Health and Safety legislation and departmental policies is a critical part of the role.
