PHYSIOTHERAPIST GRADE 1 TO 3

This position is for a qualified physiotherapist to work within the Metro Health Services directorate at the Kleinvlei Community Day Centre, which operates under the Khayelitsha/Eastern Sub-structure. The role is an OSD-graded clinical post, meaning the appointed candidate will be placed at a specific grade depending on their level of relevant experience after registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. As a physiotherapist in this primary health care facility, the incumbent will be expected to respond to the rehabilitation needs of a diverse patient population, working within a broader multi-disciplinary team and contributing to community-oriented primary care initiatives.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that enables registration with the HPCSA as a physiotherapist. For South African qualified employees, Grade 1 requires no prior experience after registration, while foreign qualified applicants must have at least one year of relevant experience. Grade 2 requires a minimum of ten years for locally trained candidates or eleven years for foreign qualified candidates, and Grade 3 requires twenty years or twenty-one years respectively. All candidates must also possess a valid Code B or EB driver’s licence, which is an inherent requirement of the job. Essential knowledge and skills include a sound understanding of applicable health legislation, public service policies and procedures, and the ability to work both independently and within a team. Practical experience with the Infant Neuromotor Assessment as a screening tool, as well as experience in assessing and treating infants, is specifically required. Computer literacy is also necessary for the administrative aspects of the role.

The core duties involve assessing, treating and managing patients within the primary health care setting, including those seen through the Community Based Services programme and community-orientated primary care (COPC). The physiotherapist will also be responsible for managing the Mobility Assistive Devices component at the facility, ensuring that patients receive appropriate assistive equipment. Working closely with the multi-disciplinary team is central to the role, as is planning and conducting health events, outreaches and training sessions. The post also carries a teaching and supervisory component, with the expectation that the incumbent will assist in the clinical mentoring and supervision of undergraduate physiotherapy students. Administrative responsibilities include patient-related documentation, departmental administration, and the management of assets in the allocated work area.
