PROFESSIONAL NURSE GRADE 1 TO 2 (SPECIALTY: MATERNITY CLINICAL FACILITATOR)

An exciting opportunity exists within the Rural Health Services directorate at George Regional Hospital for a Professional Nurse Grade 1 to 2 specialising as a Maternity Clinical Facilitator. This role is central to strengthening maternal and neonatal care by developing the nursing workforce through structured education, clinical accompaniment and skills assessment. The successful candidate will join the hospital’s nurse training department, working to ensure that all nursing personnel are competent, confident and compliant with relevant regulations and service protocols. As a clinical facilitator, the post holder acts as a bridge between theory and practice, supporting nurses in real-world maternity settings while also contributing to the broader strategic goals of the department.

Applicants must hold a basic R425 diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, candidates need either a one-year post-basic qualification in Advanced Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing Science (R212), or a four-year bachelor’s degree in nursing along with a postgraduate diploma in Midwifery (R635). Registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse is mandatory. For appointment at Grade 1, at least four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration in General Nursing is required. For Grade 2, a minimum of fourteen years of appropriate nursing experience is needed, including at least ten years specifically in Midwifery after obtaining the specialty qualification. Candidates should also be willing to work outside normal hours and attend congresses, courses or workshops to keep their skills current and aligned with best practice.

The core duties of this post involve facilitating learning opportunities for all nursing personnel, coordinating in-service training, updating skills and competencies, and managing the orientation programme for newly appointed nurses. The facilitator will evaluate and assess the clinical competencies and personal development of nursing staff, ensuring that they meet the required standards of care. Another important responsibility is to ensure the appropriate placement and accompaniment of nursing personnel, offering support and guidance during their clinical practice. The role also includes the effective management of resources, which means planning, organising and coordinating services with a strong focus on problem-solving and decision-making. The ideal candidate will demonstrate leadership in achieving the strategic goals of the nurse training department and possess a sound knowledge of the Nursing Act, SANC regulations and Western Cape Department of Health policies.

This is an OSD-graded professional nursing position within the public health sector, and the incumbent will report within the hospital’s nursing education structure.
