The Western Cape Division of the High Court, based in Cape Town, is seeking to appoint a Data Capturer to support the accurate and efficient management of court records and case-related information. This is a junior-level administrative position within the office of the judiciary, working under the direction of the Court Manager and supervisors. The successful candidate will become part of a team responsible for the smooth flow of documents and data within one of South Africa’s principal courts, ensuring that case files, correspondence, registers and statistics are correctly captured, stored and made available to judges, registrars, verification personnel and other components. The role is central to the proper administration of justice, as reliable data entry and record-keeping directly supports the court’s operational efficiency and accountability.

Candidates must hold a Grade 12 certificate or an equivalent qualification at NQF level four, recognised by SAQA. No previous work experience is required, which makes this vacancy well suited to entry-level applicants interested in starting a career in the public sector or the justice system. A valid driver’s licence is listed as an added advantage. The position calls for a solid grasp of clerical duties and data-capturing practices, together with knowledge of Batho Pele principles and the working procedures of a court environment. The ideal applicant should be skilled in written and verbal communication, interpersonal relations, computer literacy, customer service, planning, organising and problem solving. Strong analytical and numeracy abilities are essential, as are the personal attributes of being able to work under pressure, being flexible, motivated, meticulous and self-driven.

The core duties involve capturing data from available records into required formats such as databases, tables and spreadsheets. The Data Capturer must verify any missing data or errors noticed during entry, review and validate all data from files, and submit data while making regular backups. The incumbent will update registers and statistics, keep and maintain records and files in an organised and secure way, and ensure that all case records and court documents are kept safely while in their possession. The role further requires providing information to various components, assisting verification personnel by supplying the necessary data sources and files, and collecting correspondence from the general office. The Data Capturer will also distribute files and correspondence to Registrars, send and receive emails as requested, and report all IT problems immediately to a supervisor. Additional responsibilities include answering attorneys’ queries relating to quasi-judicial matters, opening files, sorting and distributing incoming data for capturing evenly, and providing any other support required by the judiciary, Court Manager or supervisors.

This post is advertised as an entry-level opportunity within a government employment framework, and the successful candidate will be required to sign a performance agreement. As part of the organisation’s commitment to transformation, preference will be given to candidates in line with the Employment Equity goals of the judiciary. Enquiries for technical and human resource matters are provided in the original circular, and applicants are reminded to ensure their submissions reach the designated channel before the closing date. This position offers a meaningful chance to contribute to the effective functioning of the High Court while developing valuable clerical, technical and interpersonal skills in a professional legal environment.
