The National School of Government is seeking a Chief Director for Curriculum Support and Trainer Professionalisation, a re-advertised senior management post based in Pretoria. Previous applicants are encouraged to re-apply. This strategic leadership role is responsible for driving the institution-wide curriculum support and Education, Training and Development (ETD) practitioner professionalisation functions, positioning the NSG as a credible, innovative and quality-driven education and training provider. The work is anchored in constitutional values, public sector capability requirements, and the institution's higher education and skills development mandate, meaning the incumbent will shape both the substance of public service learning programmes and the professional standing of those who design and deliver them.
Candidates must hold at least a bachelor's degree or equivalent at NQF level 7, with a post-graduate qualification and registration with a relevant professional body serving as added advantages. The successful applicant will undergo security vetting at an appropriate clearance level for senior managers. Extensive relevant experience is required, including at least five years at senior managerial level leading curriculum design and development in education, training or public sector capacity building. Proven experience is expected in developing courses, occupational qualifications, skills programmes and higher education programmes; registering qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework; leading large-scale education or professionalisation initiatives; managing multidisciplinary teams and budgets; and engaging stakeholders at executive level across government, academia and international bodies. Demonstrated experience in driving digital learning innovation, applied research, publication, and the development of curriculum frameworks is also essential.
The core responsibilities centre on developing, reviewing and implementing curriculum policies, norms, standards and institutional frameworks aligned with national priorities, as well as leading the design and implementation of a comprehensive ETD practitioner professionalisation framework, including competency standards and learning pathways. The role demands deep knowledge of higher education and skills development frameworks, instructional design models, outcomes-based education, the Constitution, and public sector legislation such as the Public Service Act, the Public Administration Management Act, the Skills Development Act, the Public Finance Management Act and the National Qualifications Framework Act. Familiarity with ETD professionalisation standards, public governance, digital learning ecosystems, research methodologies, MTEF budgeting processes and change management is also crucial. Strong skills are needed in curriculum architecture, complex simulations, action learning, learning technology selection and analytics, mentoring, public presentation, advanced writing and editing, conflict management, and the MS Office Suite and Adobe. The incumbent must embody high integrity, intellectual leadership, a results-driven orientation, resilience, and a strong commitment to transformation and Batho Pele principles, while effectively managing people, fostering knowledge sharing, solving problems and driving organisational change.
This role requires the ability to multitask, work both independently and collaboratively, build effective relationships, and maintain professional currency through ongoing development activities. Domestic and international travel and extended work hours may be required. In line with employment equity requirements, preference will be given to African males, youth, African and Coloured males, and people with disabilities.
