CLINICAL NURSE PRACTITIONER GRADE 1 TO 2 (PRIMARY HEALTH CARE) Cape Winelands Health District

This position offers an opportunity for an experienced professional nurse to join the Cape Winelands Health District as a Clinical Nurse Practitioner in Primary Health Care, based at the Koue Bokkeveld Mobile unit within the Witzenberg Sub-district. The role is central to delivering accessible primary health care services to communities served by this mobile facility, and it forms part of the broader district health system under the Western Cape Department of Health. Applicants must hold a basic R425 diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification such as R683 plus R254, which permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, a post-basic qualification in Clinical Nursing Science: Health Assessment, Treatment and Care, accredited with the SANC under R48 and lasting at least one year, is required. Alternatively, a four-year bachelor’s degree in nursing under R174, or an equivalent combination such as R683 plus R1497 or R171 plus R1497, may be accepted, as may a postgraduate diploma in Primary Care Nursing accredited with the SANC under R635. Registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse is essential. For Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration is required. For Grade 2, at least fourteen years of appropriate experience is needed, of which ten years must have been gained after obtaining the one-year post-basic qualification in the relevant speciality. A valid code B or EB driver’s licence is an inherent requirement of the post, given the mobile nature of the service.

The successful candidate will be expected to assist with managing the burden of disease in line with Western Cape guidelines and protocols, while providing and maintaining a high standard of care to all patients. Key duties include keeping accurate clinical records, statistics registers and referral records, using resources and stock effectively within budget constraints, and participating in community events to raise awareness of health-related issues. The role requires both independent work and active participation in inter-professional and multi-disciplinary teamwork. Supervision and mentoring of lower-category staff are also important responsibilities, alongside maintaining professional growth, ethical standards and self-development. Competencies needed include NIMART training or experience, in-depth knowledge of nursing and public service legislation, computer literacy in MS Word and Excel, and the ability to promote quality patient care through the implementation of protocols, guidelines and standards.
