REGISTRAR (MEDICAL) (RADIOLOGY) (X4 POSTS) (5-Year Contract)

This position offers a unique opportunity for qualified medical practitioners to specialise in radiology through a structured five-year registrar contract at Tygerberg Hospital in Parow Valley. Four posts are available, and successful appointees will be part of a tertiary-level diagnostic imaging service that operates across a distributed training platform, meaning registrars are based at a specific hospital but may be required to work at associated training facilities as part of an agreed programme. The role is demanding and clinically focused, requiring the delivery of safe, comprehensive 24-hour diagnostic radiology services to patients at Tygerberg Hospital and its linked institutions. Registrars will be expected to produce accurate and timeous radiological reports, assist in maintaining optimal workflow across imaging domains, and perform onsite after-hours duties according to the call roster. Emergency and after-hours call cover is an inherent requirement, as is participation in a system of remunerated commuted overtime.

Applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Medical Practitioner, and they must already be registered with the HPCSA in Independent Practice. In addition, candidates need to have passed the Primary Examination – Part 1 FC Rad (Diag.) SA, and must demonstrate supervised clinical experience in any aspect of diagnostic imaging, along with appropriate general medical and radiology experience gained since obtaining the MBChB degree. A valid Code B or EB driver’s licence and a willingness to travel are essential, as registrars may need to move between facilities. Strong leadership, interpersonal, computer and communication skills are also required, including the ability to type, manage spreadsheets and use databases.

The core duties extend beyond clinical service delivery. Registrars are expected to attend teaching programme activities, tutorials and assessments as part of their training, and to assist in training medical students, nursing staff and radiographers. They will learn the critical skills required of a radiologist and must become involved in research or audits relating to radiodiagnosis. Appointment is on a contract basis for a maximum of five years, and registrars will be required to register as post-graduate students with Stellenbosch University in line with the university’s yearbook and guidelines. Should registration with the higher education institution be discontinued for any reason, the registrar appointment will also cease.
