This position is for a Nursing Manager at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital, a tertiary and highly complex level three hospital. The role is an OSD-graded senior nursing management post within the public health sector, and the successful candidate will be responsible for providing strategic leadership and direction to the nursing division. As a member of the Senior Management Team, the Nursing Manager will represent the nursing department at executive level and ensure that nursing services align with the hospital’s broader goals and objectives. The role requires someone who can manage a complex nursing environment, promote professional nursing ethics, and drive the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care in line with Batho Pele principles.
Applicants must hold the basic R425 qualification, either a degree or diploma in general nursing, and must be currently registered with the South African Nursing Council as a General Nurse. A minimum of ten years of appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration is required, with at least five of those years at management level. In addition, candidates must possess a Diploma in Midwifery and a Diploma or Degree in Nursing Administration and Education, as well as any speciality in nursing. The ideal candidate will have experience managing a complex nursing environment and demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the legislative framework governing the public service, nursing legislation, and related legal and ethical practices. Strong communication skills, good human relations, leadership and management abilities, problem analysis and decision-making skills, and a basic understanding of human resources and financial policies are essential. Basic computer literacy, the ability to plan and organise work, and the capacity to perform under pressure are also required.
The main duties include providing guidance and leadership toward the strategic goals of the nursing division, offering professional and technical support for patient care, and developing and monitoring nursing policies, programmes, regulations, and standards. The Nursing Manager will establish and maintain inter-professional and multi-disciplinary teamwork, ensure effective management and utilisation of human and material resources, and supervise the provision of efficient patient care. The role also involves handling disciplinary and grievance matters, evaluating compliance with clinical protocols and national core standards, and working effectively with people from diverse intellectual, cultural, racial, and religious backgrounds.
Applicants must complete a Z83 application form and submit a detailed curriculum vitae, with certified copies of qualifications and proof of registration requested only from shortlisted candidates. Shortlisted candidates must also provide an original signed letter from their current employer confirming relevant experience, and any foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA before the interview. The selection process includes pre-employment screening, a CIPC check, and two pre-entry assessments covering practical suitability and integrity. The hospital is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer and encourages people with disabilities and African males to apply, while all race groups remain eligible. Due to financial constraints, no subsistence and travel claims will be paid, and applications are not acknowledged; candidates not contacted within sixty days of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful.
