This internship opportunity is based at the Western Cape Provincial Service Centre of the Office of the Chief Justice in Cape Town, offering a single placement within a structured Human Resource Management internship programme. The role is designed to provide a recent graduate with meaningful workplace exposure to the administrative and operational side of human resources within the judicial support environment. As an intern, the successful candidate will be integrated into the provincial service centre’s HR team, where they will have the chance to apply theoretical knowledge gained through their studies to real public-sector HR processes. The programme forms part of the broader recruitment and skills development initiatives of the Office of the Chief Justice, which is responsible for providing administrative support to the judiciary across South Africa.

To be considered for this internship, applicants must hold a Grade 12 certificate as well as a three-year National Diploma or Degree in Human Resource Management at NQF level 6 with 360 credits, or an equivalent qualification recognised by SAQA. This means the role is specifically aimed at individuals who have completed a full undergraduate qualification in HRM or a closely related field, not those still studying or holding only a school-leaving certificate. The qualification requirement ensures that the intern has a solid foundational understanding of human resource principles, labour relations, recruitment and selection, training and development, and organisational behaviour, which will be developed further during the internship.

While the specific day-to-day duties are not itemised in the advertisement, the nature of an HRM internship within a provincial service centre typically involves supporting the HR unit with tasks such as maintaining personnel records, assisting with recruitment and selection processes, preparing correspondence, capturing data, and helping to ensure compliance with HR policies and procedures. The intern will work under supervision and will be expected to contribute to the smooth running of HR administration in the office. This practical experience is intended to bridge the gap between academic learning and the demands of the workplace, making the intern more competitive for future permanent employment in the public service or elsewhere.

The recruitment process for this position includes several important conditions. All applications must be submitted on the new Z83 application form, accompanied by a comprehensive CV and contactable referees. Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified copies of their qualifications and other documents before the interview, and all shortlisted candidates will undergo two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability for the post, and one integrity assessment measuring ethical conduct. These assessments are scored as part of the interview process. Applicants may also be asked to provide consent for access to their social media accounts, and all successful candidates will be subjected to personnel suitability checks, including criminal record, financial, qualification, citizenship, reference and employment verification. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation.

Successful candidates will be expected to enter into an employment contract and a performance agreement within three months of appointment, and will be required to undergo a security clearance. The Office of the Chief Justice complies with the Protection of Personal Information Act, and all personal information provided will be used solely for recruitment purposes, with unsuccessful applications retained for internal audit purposes. Correspondence is limited to shortlisted candidates, and if no contact is made within three months of the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. The department reserves the right not to make any appointment. This internship is therefore an excellent opportunity for a qualified HR graduate to gain valuable government-sector experience, but it also demands strict attention to the application requirements and a willingness to undergo a thorough vetting process.
