The Senior Court Interpreter position is based at the Western Cape Division of the High Court in Cape Town, within the Office of the Chief Justice. This role is central to the fair administration of justice, ensuring that all participants in court proceedings can communicate effectively regardless of the language they speak. The successful candidate will be appointed at salary level 07 and will be required to sign a performance agreement, reflecting the professional standards expected in this role. This is a demanding but rewarding opportunity for an experienced interpreter who wishes to contribute to the effective functioning of the High Court and the broader justice system.
Applicants must possess a National Diploma in Legal Interpreting or an equivalent qualification at NQF level 6 with 360 credits recognised by SAQA, combined with at least two years of practical experience in a court interpreting environment. Alternatively, a Grade 12 certificate with ten years of practical court interpreting experience will be considered. Language proficiency is essential: fluency in English and either Afrikaans or isiXhosa is required, while proficiency in any other indigenous language such as Sotho, Tswana or Zulu, as well as knowledge of a foreign language, will serve as an added advantage. A valid driver’s licence is also advantageous. The ideal candidate will have a thorough knowledge of relevant acts and regulations, an understanding of cultural contexts, and the ability to translate accurately while keeping to time frames. Key skills include computer literacy in MS Office, strong written and verbal communication, time management, interpersonal relations, planning and organising, decision making, analytical thinking and problem solving. Personal attributes such as flexibility, self-motivation, the ability to work under pressure, accuracy and attention to detail are essential for success in this environment.
The core duty of the Senior Court Interpreter is to render interpreting services in a wide range of legal proceedings, including criminal matters, civil proceedings, Older Persons Act matters, family law cases, protection from Harassment Act matters, labour court matters, Maintenance Act matters, child justice matters, inquests and equality court matters. The interpreter will also interpret during pre-trial proceedings and consultations, and will liaise with supervisors or other departments and organisations to arrange foreign language interpreters when required. The role involves interpreting from the source to the target language during court proceedings, including non-verbal gestures, dramatisations and confessions, while ensuring that the interpretation is audible, clear and faithful, without embellishment or omission. The interpreter must control the speaker and ensure that citations are interpreted correctly. In addition to live interpretation, the position requires translating legal documents and exhibits, studying and analysing source documents, conducting necessary research, consulting with relevant parties, and checking, editing and revising translated documents. The interpreter will also translate mechanically recorded audio material, develop terminology, maintain a glossary database, gather trial documents, coin new words, and provide administrative support to the judiciary, court manager and supervisor.
