The Mpumalanga Department of Education is seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to fill the permanent post of Director for Inclusive Education and Education Support at its Head Office in Mbombela. Operating within the Chief Directorate of the same name and reporting at senior management service level, this role is central to the department's commitment to providing quality education for all learners. The successful candidate will serve as a member of the department's management structure, contributing to strategic decision-making while providing leadership to the directorate responsible for policy, programmes and systems that support both ordinary learners and those with special learning needs. This includes oversight of psychological, guidance and social support services within the provincial education system.
Applicants must possess a SAQA-recognised Bachelor's degree or Advanced Diploma at NQF level 7 in a relevant field, together with at least five years' experience at middle or senior managerial level. The department looks for a proven track record in strategic leadership, high-level planning, policy formulation, and programme management and evaluation. An in-depth understanding of public service and education sector legislation is essential, as is the ability to apply participative management principles, build strong teams, and develop logical frameworks and planning models. Strong financial management, analytical and problem-solving skills are required, along with excellent verbal and written communication, report writing, networking, and computer skills. Candidates must be willing to travel and work beyond normal hours, maintain confidentiality, and hold a valid driver's licence. As the post is at SMS level, appointment is subject to the successful completion of the Public Service Senior Management Leadership Programme and the production of the prescribed pre-entry certificate from the National School of Governance, at the candidate's own cost. Shortlisted candidates will also undergo a technical exercise and an integrity assessment.
The directorate's core duties are broad and impactful. The Director will take responsibility for developing, evaluating and maintaining policies, programmes and systems for inclusive education, covering ordinary learners, learners with special educational needs, and psychosocial support programmes. The role includes designing systems to improve the efficiency and productivity of the directorate, proactively building sound relationships with key stakeholders and organised labour, promoting a culture of efficiency and quality, and empowering staff through performance management, coaching, development and skills transfer. The department is an equal opportunities employer and follows affirmative action practices, with preference given to candidates whose appointment will promote representivity in terms of disability, gender and race. Appointments are made in line with the department's Employment Equity Plan, and all recommended candidates are subject to qualification verification and vetting. This is a demanding senior leadership position for someone ready to shape inclusive education in Mpumalanga.
