    This vacancy, re-advertised by the Gauteng Department of Health, is for a Medical Specialist in Psychiatry within the Sedibeng District Health Services, based in the Mental Health directorate. The successful candidate will occupy a senior clinical post that is jointly appointed with the University of the Witwatersrand, meaning the role blends service delivery, academic teaching, and research responsibilities.     Applicants must hold a Grade 12 or Matric certificate as well as an MBChB degree, followed by a FC Psych or MMed in Psychiatry, or an equivalent qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Psychiatry. Proof of current HPCSA registration for the 2026/2027 period is required. The entry-level Grade 1 post requires no experience after registration as a specialist, while Grade 2 calls for a minimum of five years of appropriate experience, and Grade 3 requires at least ten years. The ideal candidate will have sound psychiatric knowledge, the ability to diagnose and manage common medical problems including emergencies, and strong communication, leadership, interpersonal, and decision-making skills. Familiarity with current health legislation and policies applicable to public institutions is also essential.

    The duties span several domains. Clinically, the specialist will support and implement community psychiatry and integrated primary mental health care across the Sedibeng Health District, providing community-based psychiatric care, treatment, and rehabilitation as part of the community psychiatry team. Academically, the post requires teaching and supervising Psychiatric Registrars and Medical Officers in district psychiatric clinics, as well as providing in-service training and clinical support to family physicians and primary health care practitioners to strengthen integrated mental health care. The role also includes collaborating with non-health sectors to improve recognition and care of people with mental illness, participating in community mental health outreach and awareness activities, and promoting research in community psychiatry and integrated mental health care. This includes supervising master’s research reports by registrars, joining collaborative projects, and conducting one’s own studies. Administrative responsibilities involve working with the district mental health team on clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives for Sedibeng mental health services.
