MEDICAL OFFICER

This position offers an exciting opportunity for a qualified medical practitioner to join the Department of Health as a Medical Officer within the Radiology Directorate at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, one of Gauteng’s largest tertiary academic institutions. The role is an OSD-graded medical post, and the appointed candidate will work within a dynamic clinical environment that combines patient care, teaching, and research. As part of the radiology team, the Medical Officer will be responsible for delivering comprehensive clinical services while supporting the broader multidisciplinary management of patients across the hospital. The post also provides access to training opportunities within the radiology department, making it particularly attractive for doctors seeking to broaden their experience and potentially pursue further specialisation.

Applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner, and they must already have HPCSA registration for the 2026/2027 term as an independent medical practitioner. Importantly, candidates must have completed their community service; no prior working experience is required, which opens the door for recently qualified doctors ready to take the next step in their careers. The role also involves a willingness to perform commuted overtime and to participate in after-hour duties, including nights, weekends, and public holidays, ensuring continuous and uninterrupted care for patients.

The core duties are wide-ranging and clinically demanding. The incumbent will interview, investigate, diagnose, and oversee the treatment of patients, alongside handling patient-related administrative responsibilities. This includes participating in all activities of the discipline relating to teaching and research, contributing to departmental audit activities, preparing reports, and liaising with both internal departments and the broader community. The Medical Officer will supervise junior doctors, including undergraduate students, interns, and community service doctors, and is expected to attend administrative meetings such as mortality and near-miss meetings. Completing medico-legal documents, including death certificates, in a timely manner is a key responsibility. The role also requires improving the quality of care by delivering appropriate clinical care, reducing medical litigation through sound ethical practice, and implementing and monitoring adherence to the National Core Standards. Practical procedures relevant to patient care are expected, as is participation in departmental meetings, journal clubs, case presentations, lectures, and ward rounds. Rotation through related departments within the hospital may also be required.
