This permanent position is for a Professional Nurse Grade 1 to 3 who will serve as a Clinical Trainer at Helderberg Hospital, within the Chief Directorate: Metro Health Services of the Western Cape Department of Health. The role is central to the hospital's nurse training department, focusing on the continuous professional development of nursing staff. As a clinical trainer, you will be responsible for facilitating in-service training, updating skills and competencies, and running the orientation programme for newly appointed nurses. You will also assist in managing the physical, material and financial resources of the training department, ensuring that training is delivered effectively and efficiently. The post requires someone who can maintain ethical standards, promote professional growth and self-development among staff, and actively participate in personal development, research and quality improvement initiatives. You will also implement assessment strategies to evaluate the competencies of both staff and learners, ensuring that training outcomes are measurable and aligned with the needs of the hospital.
To be considered, candidates must hold a basic R425 qualification, which is a diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification (R683 plus R254 plus R880) that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse. Current registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse is required. The experience requirements vary by grade: for Grade 1, no prior nursing experience is required; for Grade 2, a minimum of 10 years of appropriate or recognisable experience in nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse in General Nursing is needed; and for Grade 3, at least 20 years of such experience is required. In addition, candidates must possess a valid Code EB/EC driver's licence and be willing to perform after-hour training services for staff members on night duty.
The role demands good interpersonal, planning and organisational skills, as well as computer literacy in MS Word, Excel and Outlook. Knowledge of nursing education and training is essential. Shortlisted candidates may be required to undergo a compulsory competency test as part of the selection process. There is also a special concession for applicants who do not yet have the stipulated registration requirements: they may still apply, provided they submit proof of application for registration with the relevant council and proof of payment of the prescribed registration fees on or before the day of the interview. This concession applies only to first-time applicants for registration in a specific category, including those who need to change their registration status. Applications received will form a pool that may be used to fill similar vacancies at Helderberg Hospital for a period of three months from the date of the advert, provided the job title, core functions, inherent requirements and salary level are the same. This is an OSD-graded permanent post with service benefits, and the position offers an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to nursing education within a public health setting.
