This permanent position offers two posts for a Clinical Nurse Practitioner at Primary Health Care level, one based at TC Newman CDC and the other at Wellington CDC, within the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness. The role is central to strengthening community-based health services and managing the growing burden of disease in the region. As a Clinical Nurse Practitioner, you will work within a multidisciplinary team but also exercise independent clinical judgment, providing comprehensive primary care to patients across the lifespan. The department operates within an Ecosystem Service platform, meaning that although your base is at one of the listed centres, you may be required to render clinical services at other institutions within the ecosystem to sustain service delivery as needs arise. This flexibility is essential to ensuring continuous access to care across the network.

The core duties involve assisting with the management of disease burden in line with Western Cape guidelines and protocols, ensuring that all patients receive quality care that meets professional and departmental standards. You will be responsible for maintaining accurate clinical records, statistics registers, and referral documentation, which are vital for monitoring outcomes and planning services. Effective utilisation of resources and stock within tight budget constraints is a key expectation, requiring careful planning and accountability. You will also participate in community events and initiate health awareness activities, helping to promote prevention and early intervention. Supervision and mentorship of lower-category nursing staff form an important part of the role, as does fostering inter-professional collaboration while being able to work autonomously. Maintaining professional growth, ethical standards, and self-development is an ongoing requirement.

To be considered, you must hold a basic R425 qualification in nursing (diploma or degree) or an equivalent that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, you need a post-basic qualification of at least one year in Clinical Nursing Science: Health Assessment, Treatment and Care, accredited with SANC, or a four-year bachelor’s degree in nursing that meets the same registration requirement, or a postgraduate diploma in Primary Care Nursing accredited with SANC. Current registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse is mandatory. For Grade 1, you need a minimum of four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration. For Grade 2, you need at least fourteen years of appropriate experience, with at least ten of those years gained after obtaining the one-year post-basic qualification in the relevant specialty. A valid driver’s licence is an inherent requirement of the job, as you may need to travel between facilities or for community outreach. Competencies include in-depth knowledge of nursing and public service legislation, strong written and verbal communication skills, and computer literacy in MS Word and Excel.

Candidates who do not yet possess the stipulated registration may still apply, provided they submit proof of application for registration and payment of the prescribed fees to the relevant council on or before the day of the interview. This concession applies only to first-time applicants for the specific post-basic qualifications mentioned. No payment of any kind is required when applying for this post. The position is graded as Clinical Nurse Practitioner Grade 1 to 2, with salary and service benefits as per departmental scales. This is an excellent opportunity for experienced primary care nurses seeking a challenging yet rewarding role in public health, with a strong emphasis on clinical excellence, community engagement, and professional development.
