An exciting permanent opportunity exists for a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine at George Regional Hospital, within the Chief Directorate: Rural Health Services. This role is central to delivering comprehensive internal medicine services across the hospital and the broader Rural East Ecosystem, requiring a careful balance between patient throughput and high-quality, cost-effective care. The position is graded at Specialist levels 1 to 3, with appointment and progression based on the candidate’s years of appropriate experience after registration, and the remuneration package can be structured according to the individual’s personal needs.
Applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine. For Grade 1, no post-registration experience is required. Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years’ appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine, while Grade 3 requires at least ten years. Experience gained with a recognised foreign health professional council is accepted for foreign-qualified employees. Candidates who do not yet have the stipulated registration may also apply, provided they submit proof of application for registration and proof of payment of the prescribed fees to the relevant council on or before the day of the interview. This concession applies only to health professionals applying for the first time for registration in a specific category, including those who must apply for a change in registration status.
The successful candidate will render an efficient, professional, and ethical internal medicine service to patients managed by the hospital and district, participating actively in the after-hours call system and performing commuted overtime. Key duties include assisting with the effective administration of the Internal Medicine Department and supporting the Head of Department with specific projects relating to antibiotic stewardship, PPTC, critical care, and clinical governance. The specialist will serve as a role model and clinical mentor to junior doctors and associated clinical staff, setting an appropriate example of an exemplary medical practitioner. The post also involves assisting with unit training commitments, ensuring the rational use of resources, participating in audits and clinical governance activities, and contributing to outreach and support services for the greater Rural East Ecosystem as needed. Maintaining good relations with patients, nursing staff, colleagues, and referral services at tertiary and district hospital level is essential, as is adherence to all HR requirements and conducting appropriate clinical audits and research to stay abreast of clinical developments.
Desired competencies include excellent communication and conflict management skills, cost-conscious care provision, good technology and computer skills, problem-solving experience, and leadership and mentoring ability. Experience in teaching, conducting and supervising research, and performing audits, publications, and research is expected, along with proven knowledge of public health policies, guidelines, and related prescripts to manage resources effectively. Inherent requirements include a valid Code B/EB driver’s licence and willingness to travel. Shortlisted candidates will be subjected to a practical assessment. No payment of any kind is required when applying for this post. This is an OSD-graded position, and enquiries may be directed to the contact person listed in the advertisement.
