This permanent Staff Nurse position is based at the Plettenberg Bay Clinic within the Knysna/Bitou Sub-district of the Garden Route District, Western Cape. It forms part of the Western Cape Department of Health and is graded for Staff Nurses from Grade 1 through Grade 3, allowing appointment at a level that matches the successful candidate's experience. The role operates within the broader Ecosystem Service platform, meaning that although the post is linked to a specific facility, the incumbent must be prepared to render clinical services across other institutions in the ecosystem as needed to sustain health service delivery. This ensures staffing flexibility and continuity of care across the district’s facilities.
The core purpose of the role is to provide basic clinical nursing care and to support the development and implementation of patient care plans. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering direct nursing interventions, ensuring effective utilisation of physical and financial resources, and actively participating in infection prevention and control measures. The role also requires the nurse to take actions that improve the overall quality of nursing care, maintain professional growth and ethical standards, and engage in continuous self-development. These duties call for a disciplined individual with strong self-motivation, as well as good communication skills to interact with patients, families, and other health professionals.
In terms of qualifications, applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Staff Nurse, and they must be registered with the SANC in that category. Experience requirements vary by grade: Grade 1 requires no experience, Grade 2 requires a minimum of ten years of appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration as a Staff Nurse with the SANC, and Grade 3 requires at least twenty years of such experience. An important concession applies to candidates who do not yet hold the stipulated registration: they may still apply, but they must submit proof of application for registration with the relevant council and proof of payment of the prescribed registration fees on or before the day of the interview. This concession is available only to health professionals applying for the first time for registration in a specific category, including those who must apply for a change in registration status.
The inherent requirements of the job include a willingness to work overtime and to perform outreach services, as well as a valid Code B/EB driver’s licence. Candidates will be subjected to a written or practical assessment as well as an oral assessment. It is also noted that no payment of any kind is required when applying for this post. The position is permanent and offers the standard public service benefits package, including a 13th cheque, employer contributions to the pension fund, and housing and medical aid allowances. This is an excellent opportunity for a dedicated nurse seeking a permanent role in the public health sector, with the chance to serve a coastal community while growing professionally within a supportive district health team.
