NUCLEAR MEDICINE RADIOGRAPHER (RE-ADVERTISEMENT)

This position is for a Nuclear Medicine Radiographer based at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital, operating within the Clinical Services Directorate of the Gauteng Department of Health. The role sits within a busy academic hospital environment, where the radiographer will be responsible for delivering a full nuclear medicine imaging service, including on-call and 24-hour availability. The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and will be expected to uphold the highest standards of radiographic imaging, patient care, and compliance with public service regulations.

To be considered, applicants must hold a Bachelor of Nuclear Medicine Technology or an equivalent qualification, and they must be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Radiographer in Nuclear Medicine. In addition, the role requires four years of appropriate experience after registration as a Diagnostic Radiographer. The ideal candidate will have general gamma imaging skills, practical exposure to PET/CT imaging, and the ability to perform camera quality control. Hot lab experience is also essential, specifically the ability to label radiopharmaceuticals safely and accurately. Beyond technical skills, the position demands sound knowledge of the Hazardous Substances Act of 1973, as administered by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority, as well as a thorough understanding of radiation safety practices. Strong planning, organisational, presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills are required, along with analytical report writing abilities and computer proficiency.

The duties are wide-ranging and include ensuring the provision of a 24-hour nuclear medicine service and maintaining consistently high standards of radiographic imaging. The radiographer must keep accurate patient records, including radiation dose and exposure factors, and manage resources effectively and efficiently. The post also involves formulating and executing institutional strategic operational plans, ensuring that set targets are achieved, and supervising, developing, training, and monitoring the performance of subordinate staff. All service delivery must align with Batho Pele Principles, National Core Standards, and other public service policies and acts. The role further requires the timely submission of monthly reports, managing the budget and expenditure, and providing performance reports to the manager. The radiographer is expected to be a team player, to ensure recommended maintenance of equipment is carried out, and to enforce adherence to prescribed National Core Standards.
