Medical Registrar – Anaesthesiology

This vacancy is for a Medical Registrar in Anaesthesiology at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital, within the Clinical Services directorate of the Gauteng Department of Health. As a registrar, the successful candidate will be part of a specialist team delivering anaesthetic services while also engaging in the department’s educational and scholarly activities.

Applicants must hold an MBChB degree or an equivalent qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner. Current registration with the HPCSA in that category is essential. While not mandatory, certain additional qualifications and experience will strengthen an application: a Diploma in Anaesthesiology, passing the FCA Part 1 examination, and at least six months of post-Diploma in Anaesthesia experience in anaesthesia are all listed as added advantages. The core duty is to provide clinical services to patients at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital. Beyond direct patient care, the registrar is expected to participate actively in the department’s academic programmes, research activities, and clinical audit meetings. These responsibilities reflect the dual role of a registrar as both a service provider and a trainee. Successful candidates may also be required to rotate through training or cluster hospitals that form part of the academic platform, which broadens clinical exposure and supports the regional training network.

Several important conditions apply to this post.
