MEDICAL OFFICER: ACCIDENT & EMERGENCY – SESSIONAL

The Gauteng Department of Health at Pholosong Regional Hospital is seeking four sessional Medical Officers to join its Accident and Emergency unit under the Medical Directorate. These posts are suited to qualified medical practitioners who can deliver timeous emergency care within a busy regional hospital setting and work on a sessional basis each month. The role requires participation in the hospital’s after-hours call system as an inherent requirement, so flexibility and reliability are essential.

Applicants must hold a Senior Certificate plus an MBChB or MBBCh degree, or an equivalent medical qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Medical Practitioner. Although the post is open to those with appropriate registration, relevant Accident and Emergency or Emergency Medicine experience will strengthen an application. Additional certifications such as ACLS, ATLS and PALS are also advantageous. The ideal candidate demonstrates sound clinical judgement, strong communication and teamwork skills, and the ability to work effectively under pressure. Computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, is required.

In terms of duties, the medical officer will provide comprehensive emergency care to adult and paediatric patients, covering assessment, investigation, diagnosis, resuscitation, stabilisation, treatment and appropriate referral. They will manage medical, surgical and trauma emergencies and carry out relevant procedures within the scope of practice. The role includes participation in multidisciplinary patient management, ensuring effective patient flow and continuity of care, and maintaining accurate clinical records and medico-legal documentation timeously. Clinical governance forms a core part of the role: attending morbidity and mortality meetings, taking part in clinical audits and adverse-event or near-miss reviews, and contributing to quality improvement and patient safety initiatives. The post also requires compliance with applicable legislation, policies, clinical guidelines and health establishment norms and standards, as well as promoting appropriate and cost-effective use of healthcare resources. Teaching, training and departmental activities are part of the work, along with any other reasonable duties delegated by the Head of Department or Hospital Management.
