This position offers an opportunity for an experienced social work professional to step into a supervisory role within the North West Department of Social Development. The post of Social Work Supervisor Grade 1 is based in the Chief Directorate for Districts and Institutional Support Management, specifically within the Directorate for Districts and Service Points. There are five vacancies available across two district municipalities: one post is located at Mahikeng in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District, while the remaining four posts are in the Bojanala District, with one at Rustenburg and three at Moretele. This is a Grade 1 supervisory position, and the salary is determined according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) for social work practitioners, reflecting the level of seniority and responsibility attached to the role.
Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in social work and be registered with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) as a social worker. It is also essential to provide proof of payment of the annual registration fees for the current cycle, as this demonstrates active and compliant professional standing. In addition, applicants need a minimum of seven years of appropriate experience in social work, counted from the date of registration as a social worker with the SACSSP. A valid driver’s licence is also required, as the role involves travel and service delivery across the district.
The core of this role is to lead and coordinate the delivery of social work services aimed at the care, support, protection and development of vulnerable individuals, groups, families and communities. This is achieved through the implementation of relevant departmental programmes designed to address social instability and its causes. The supervisor is expected to attend to any other matters that may result from, or lead to, social instability in any form, ensuring that the unit responds promptly and effectively to emerging social issues. A significant part of the position involves supervising employees engaged in these functions, including social workers, social auxiliary workers and volunteers. The supervisor provides guidance, support and professional advice to ensure that the social work service is effective, ethical and aligned with departmental standards. The role also requires the incumbent to stay up to date with new developments and best practices in the social work field, applying this knowledge to improve service delivery. Administrative oversight forms another major responsibility: the supervisor is accountable for all administrative functions within the unit and is expected to undertake the higher-level administrative tasks themselves. This includes ensuring accurate record-keeping, reporting and compliance with departmental procedures.
This is a demanding but rewarding career opportunity for social workers with substantial experience and a desire to move into management. The multiple locations mean that candidates may be considered for placement according to district needs, and preference may be given to applicants residing in or willing to relocate to the specified areas. For serving public servants, it is important to follow the prescribed application procedures for internal transfers. Given the seniority of the post, shortlisted candidates may be required to undergo further vetting or competency assessments. Interested applicants are encouraged to ensure that their registration with the SACSSP is current and that they can provide all necessary documentation to support their application. This role is ideal for a dedicated social work professional ready to take on greater responsibility in shaping services for vulnerable populations within the North West Province.
