This vacancy is for an Operational Nursing Manager in General Nursing at Sonop Old Age Home, a position that sits within the Chief Directorate for Districts and Institutional Support Management, under the Directorate for Districts and Service Points. The role is essentially a middle-management nursing post in a residential care facility for the elderly, and it carries a salary determined in accordance with the Occupational Specific Dispensation, meaning the package is aligned with the structured progression of nursing professions in the South African public service. The position reports into the broader district health and institutional support framework pronounced by the North West Department of Social Development.

To be considered, applicants must hold a basic nursing qualification, either a diploma or degree, and must be registered with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse, with current proof of that registration. In addition, the post requires a minimum of seven years of appropriate, recognisable nursing experience after registration as a Professional Nurse in General Nursing. A valid driver’s licence is also a non-negotiable requirement, presumably because the role may involve travel or oversight duties. Beyond the formal requirements, the department has outlined a set of essential competencies that the successful candidate should bring. These include report writing, planning and organising skills, time management, good communication and interpersonal abilities, computer literacy, teamwork and collaboration skills, and a sound professional work ethic.

The duties of the position are wide-ranging and go beyond direct patient care. The Operational Nursing Manager will be responsible for managing, controlling and acting on all facets of health, support, security, cleaning, infection control and ground services within the facility. This means overseeing personnel matters, including supervision and performance management, as well as managing finances and procurement processes. The role also involves implementing relevant policies, prescripts and protocols across these areas. Strategic planning is another key component, with the expectation that the manager will plan and practice a holistic health service on a short-, medium- and long-term basis. Day-to-day clinical services must be rendered, and the manager must organise a cost-effective service to ensure resources are used wisely. The position requires that all staff receive training aligned with their Individual Development and Performance Plans, which points to a strong focus on staff development and accountability. The manager will also participate in community involvement activitiesantineed to engage beyond the facility walls scare. Finally, the incumbent must collect and verify accurate statistics and submit them timeously, while providing continuous positive support to the Facility Manager. This is a demanding operational leadership role that requires balancing clinical expertise with administrative and managerial responsibilities in an institutional care setting.
