CLINICAL NURSE PRACTITIONER (PHC)

The Department of Health is seeking to fill seventeen posts for Clinical Nurse Practitioner (PHC) within the Primary Health Care Services directorate, based at the Ekurhuleni Health District’s SSDR Clinics. This is a professional nursing role focused on delivering comprehensive, community-oriented primary health care. Successful candidates will work as part of a multidisciplinary team in a district health setting, providing holistic and specialised clinical care to patients across the lifespan. The position requires a high level of clinical autonomy, as nurse practitioners in this role are expected to assess, diagnose, treat and manage common and complex conditions within the scope of practice, while also promoting health and preventing disease in the community. The role is situated within a broader public health framework, and the incumbent will be expected to align their practice with the district’s core standards and legislative requirements.

To be considered for this post, applicants must hold a Grade 12 certificate and a basic nursing qualification accredited with the South African Nursing Council in terms of Government Notice R425, namely a diploma or degree in nursing that leads to registration as a professional nurse. In addition, a post-basic qualification of at least one year, accredited with the SANC under Government Notice R48, is required in the relevant specialty, specifically Clinical Nursing Science, Health Assessment, Treatment and Care. Candidates must also have a minimum of four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration as a professional nurse with the SANC in General Nursing. This combination of formal education and practical experience ensures that the practitioner is equipped to function independently in a primary health care setting.

The core duties of the Clinical Nurse Practitioner include providing optimal, holistic and specialised nursing care within a professional and legal framework, ensuring that all care is delivered according to set standards. The incumbent will be responsible for the effective utilisation of human, material and service resources, which involves managing workloads, supplies and support staff efficiently. Participation in training and research is also expected, as is maintaining professional growth and ethical standards for both self and subordinates. The role requires strong organisational and leadership skills, as the practitioner must plan and organise their own work, act as a team leader, and make sound decisions concerning patient care. Promoting the quality of nursing care in line with the district’s core standards is a continuous responsibility.
