This permanent position of Industrial Technician Production: Building is located within the Directorate of Engineering and Technical Services, Professional Engineering Services, of the Western Cape Department of Health. The role operates at the production end of the built environment function, supporting the design, specification, maintenance and compliance of health infrastructure across the province. The successful candidate will be responsible for converting client needs into practical, compliant technical outputs, from tender specifications and drawings to contract and project management, while ensuring that all work aligns with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the operational realities of healthcare facilities.
To be considered, applicants must hold a B-Tech or National Diploma, or an equivalent T-, N- or S-Stream qualification, in the Built Environment with a building focus rather than electrical or mechanical engineering; an equivalent relevant qualification will also be accepted. In addition, the role requires appropriate experience in the design, specification and maintenance of health infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on maintenance, compliance and minor works. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate knowledge of compiling specifications and tender documentation, producing drawings for tender, construction and submission to council, and applying sound contract and quality management skills. Practical, hands-on problem solving is central to this post, as is computer literacy in AutoCAD, MS Word and Excel. Knowledge and experience in IT and the design of built infrastructure within a healthcare environment are also required. A valid Code B or EB driver's licence is an inherent requirement of the job.
The main duties include compiling specifications, drawings and tender documentation within set time limits; liaising with clients to keep them informed and to track work progress; ensuring continuity of service schedules by prioritising work and considering operational requirements; and ensuring that equipment and working areas comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Sound contract and project management across all assigned tasks is a key responsibility.
This is a permanent post offering an annual salary within a published band, complemented by service benefits including a 13th cheque, employer contributions to a pension fund, and housing and medical aid allowances. The role demands flexibility: the incumbent must be willing to work overtime, stay away from home, and travel throughout the Western Cape Province, often at short notice, as well as assist other institutions and directorates when required. Importantly, no payment of any kind is required when applying for this post. Enquiries may be directed to the contact person named in the original advertisement.
