HEAD CLINICAL UNIT ((INTERNAL MEDICINE))

This senior clinical leadership position is based at Madadeni Hospital and calls for a qualified medical specialist in internal medicine to head the clinical unit. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering efficient and cost-effective internal medicine services not only to patients at Madadeni Hospital but also to those in its drainage sites, while strengthening clinical governance across the area of jurisdiction. The role is fundamentally about combining expert clinical practice with sound administration, strategic leadership, and teaching, ensuring that the internal medicine department runs effectively and that patient care is maintained at a high standard around the clock.

Applicants must hold an appropriate MBChB qualification and be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a specialist in internal medicine. In addition, at least five years of relevant post-registration experience as a medical specialist is required. Current registration with the HPCSA for 2026, evidenced by a receipt, must be submitted, together with a certificate of service from previous and current employers that is endorsed and stamped by human resources. These are essential criteria for consideration.

The ideal candidate will bring a solid working knowledge of specialist procedures, protocols, and public service legislation, as well as practical skills in human resources, financial management, budgeting, and project management. Computer literacy in the standard Microsoft Office applications is expected, along with report writing, presentation, and teaching abilities. The position demands strategic capability, leadership, and problem-solving skills, with a commitment to excellence, courtesy, interpersonal effectiveness, and sensitivity to cross-cultural differences.

Key responsibilities include running outpatient specialist clinics and inpatient consultations, providing expert advice to other clinicians, and supporting a 24-hour internal medicine service. The head of the clinical unit will also manage the department's administration, control resources such as laboratory investigations, medication, consumables, and equipment, and ensure that protocols align with Department of Health policies. Training and development form a significant part of the role: the incumbent will plan and participate in the training of nurses, clinical support personnel, medical officers, interns, and undergraduate medical students, while also supporting clinical research, trials, and continuing professional development activities. The position carries responsibility for developing regional services, particularly improving renal services, and for building strong partnerships with tertiary hospitals, referral centres, and community stakeholders. Additional duties include managing the EPMDS performance system, ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation, compiling expenditure frameworks, maintaining quality assurance standards, and overseeing referral management.
