This position is for a Nursing Assistant based at Mitchell’s Plain District Hospital, working within the Medicine Female Ward under the Metro Health Services directorate. The role is a structured, grade-level post, meaning the level of appointment depends on the candidate’s years of relevant experience after registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Nursing Assistant. The core purpose of the job is to support the nursing team in delivering safe, compassionate and effective basic and elementary clinical care to female patients admitted to the medical ward. As part of a multi-disciplinary team, the successful candidate will contribute to the overall functioning of the hospital and may be required to move between departments as operational needs dictate.

To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the SANC as a Nursing Assistant and must be registered with the Council in that category. The grade offered is determined by experience: entry-level candidates with no post-registration experience may apply for Grade 1, while Grade 2 requires at least ten years of appropriate nursing experience after registration, and Grade 3 requires twenty years or more. Because the hospital operates around the clock, the role demands a willingness to work shifts, including day and night duty, weekends and public holidays. The ability to perform under pressure, work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team, and remain adaptable to being deployed in different departments is essential. Competencies sought include the ability to provide quality nursing care to health care users and prior appropriate experience within a health environment.

The duties are varied and patient-centred. The Nursing Assistant will provide basic nursing care and elementary clinical nursing care, supporting patients with activities of daily living such as personal hygiene, nutritional intake, mobility and elimination needs. The role also involves assisting with patient records, maintaining professional and ethical standards, and committing to ongoing self-development. Teamwork is central, with the expectation that the incumbent will support supervisors and colleagues through active participation, while always conducting themselves with professionalism in all duties.

Importantly, no payment of any kind is required when applying for this post. Candidates who do not yet hold the required registration may still apply, provided they submit proof of their application for registration with the relevant council and proof of payment of the prescribed registration fees on or before the day of the interview. This concession applies only to health professionals applying for the first time for registration in a specific category with the council, including those who need to change their registration status. This is a meaningful opportunity for qualifying nursing assistants to join a district hospital in the Western Cape, with clear progression based on experience and a supportive team environment.
