This vacancy is for a Library Material Processor within Technical Services at the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sports in the Western Cape Government, with multiple posts available in Cape Town. The role sits within the department’s library support environment, where newly acquired library materials are prepared, recorded and moved through the system so that they can ultimately reach public libraries and readers across the province. As a Library Material Processor, you would be part of a team that ensures the smooth, accurate and timely handling of library stock, contributing directly to the department’s broader goal of delivering quality cultural and information services to communities.

The minimum qualification required is Grade 10, also known as a Junior Certificate or an equivalent qualification. While no prior work experience is explicitly specified, the role calls for a range of practical competencies. These include the ability to work well with people, to operate effectively as part of a team, and to follow instructions and procedures reliably. You also need to be able to deliver results and meet customer expectations, set and achieve personal work goals and objectives, and demonstrate numeracy, computer literacy and sound language skills. These competencies are important because the job involves both physical handling of materials and the accurate use of computer systems to record and track library items.

In terms of daily responsibilities, you will be involved in the physical processing of new library material, which may include tasks such as labelling, covering, stamping or otherwise preparing items for circulation. The role also requires weekly counting, packing and dispatch of new library material to regional offices, making organisation and attention to detail essential. In addition, you will be expected to enter item records onto the Library Information Management System, ensuring that all materials are correctly captured and traceable. Administrative duties form part of the role as well, so you should be comfortable handling routine paperwork and supporting the smooth running of the technical services unit.

Shortlisted candidates should note that the selection process includes an interview on a date and time set by the department. If shortlisted, you will be required to submit duly completed and signed vetting and supporting documentation before the interview date, as specified in the advert. Failure to do so within the given timeframe, without reasonable justification, may result in your application not being considered further. All shortlisted candidates will also complete two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise to assess suitability based on the technical and generic requirements of the post, and an integrity assessment relating to ethical conduct. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the employing department. By applying, you consent to the Western Cape Government contacting your previous employers or managers for employment references, including checks on disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. It is therefore important to ensure that all details you provide are accurate and that you are prepared to participate in a transparent recruitment process. Applications must be submitted before the closing date, as late submissions will not be accepted, and all queries can be directed to the contact person named in the advert.
