The Compensation Fund in Pretoria is seeking a Senior Legal Administrative Officer at the MR-6 level, a role that sits within the legal sub-directorate and carries significant responsibility for the Fund’s legal integrity and operational compliance. This is an OSD-graded position, reflecting its seniority and the specialised expertise required. The successful candidate will act as a key legal resource for the Fund, ensuring that its contractual arrangements, litigation matters, and statutory obligations are managed in accordance with the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act and a broad range of related legislative frameworks. The role is central to protecting the Fund’s interests, advising on complex legal questions, and supporting the strategic goals of the organisation through sound legal governance.
To be considered, applicants must hold an undergraduate qualification at NQF Level 6 in LLB, BProc, BCom Law, or BA Law, recognised by SAQA, and have at least eight years of appropriate post-qualification legal experience. Admission as an Advocate or Attorney of the High Court of South Africa is a firm requirement. The role demands a deep working knowledge of numerous statutes and policy instruments, including the COIDA, the Constitution, the Public Service Act and Regulations, the Labour Relations Act, the Employment Equity Act, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, the Promotion of Access to Information Act, the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act, the Protection of Personal Information Act, and the Public Finance Management Act. Familiarity with litigation management, internal remedies, compliance and governance, stakeholder development, and data gathering and strategic reporting is also essential. In addition, the incumbent must demonstrate a wide range of skills, including conflict management and resolution, negotiation and consensus building, contract development, investigation and critical evaluation, coaching and mentoring, people management, programme and project management, quality assurance, risk management, and service delivery innovation. The ability to set direction, inspire commitment, and contribute to vision and strategy is equally important.
The core duties of the position are varied and demanding. The Senior Legal Administrative Officer will draft and vet contracts for the Fund, manage and handle litigation on its behalf, and process section 56 applications and section 91 objections under the COID legislation. The role also involves providing legal opinions to the Fund on a range of matters and managing the human, financial, and other resources within the sub-directorate. This includes overseeing performance, ensuring quality assurance, and driving continuous improvement in legal service delivery. The position therefore requires a blend of hands-on legal work, managerial oversight, and strategic advisory capacity.
As part of the department’s employment equity commitments, priority will be given to persons with disabilities, as well as Indian and White candidates, in line with the approved equity targets. This is a demanding but rewarding opportunity for an experienced legal professional who wishes to contribute to the public service and the effective administration of South Africa’s compensation system. Interested applicants should note the application process and ensure that their submissions reach the specified channel by the closing date, as late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
