This vacancy is for a Professional Nurse General, graded at levels 1 to 3 under the Occupation Specific Dispensation, within the Nursing directorate at Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital, part of the Gauteng Department of Health. The hospital is filling six posts, and successful candidates will be placed in an environment where professional nursing care is delivered across both day and night shifts. The role is suited to registered general nurses who can work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, and who are prepared to take on shift leadership responsibilities when required.
To be considered, applicants must hold a basic R425 qualification, meaning a degree or diploma in nursing, or an equivalent qualification that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse or General Nurse. Candidates must also provide their registration certificate and proof of current registration with the SANC, such as a receipt or annual practising card. Without these documents, applications will be disqualified.
The duties of the post are broad and patient-centred. The nurse will execute all functions with proficiency in line with applicable legislation, provide a safe therapeutic environment, and monitor patient activities. Standard procedures must be performed according to policies and standard operating procedures, and care should be delivered through a multidisciplinary approach to promote holistic patient and client wellbeing. The nurse is expected to maintain clinical competence by applying scientific principles of nursing care, keep accurate and complete patient records, and comply with continuing professional development requirements set by the SANC. Client satisfaction must be upheld through quality service innovation and professional nursing care, guided by the Batho Pele principles, patients' rights, the values of nursing, and the six priorities. Accurate implementation of relevant clinical guidelines, including HAST guidelines, is required to ensure quality patient care. In the absence of the Operational Manager, the nurse takes overall management of the unit as a shift leader, which includes evaluating staff performance against the PMDS standards, motivating, coaching and mentoring staff, and managing and controlling scheduled drugs. The post requires availability for both day and night duty, as well as any other duties assigned by the supervisor.
Applications for this post are accepted strictly through the Gauteng provincial online recruitment portal; no hand-delivered, faxed or emailed applications will be considered. A fully completed and signed new Z83 form must accompany a recently updated comprehensive CV, along with the registration certificate and proof of current registration. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to produce certified copies of qualifications and other relevant documents on or before the interview date, and foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority. Correspondence is limited to shortlisted candidates, and those not contacted within three months should consider their application unsuccessful. Suitable candidates will undergo personnel suitability checks, including criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification and employment verification, and may be required to take a skills or knowledge test. The recommended candidate may also be subjected to medical surveillance in line with the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The department is committed to promoting representivity in the public service, with particular attention to race, gender and disability, and people with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. The department reserves the right not to fill the post.
