This permanent academic post sits within the Department of Intermediate Phase Studies in the Faculty of Education at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, and is based at the Wellington Campus. The successful candidate will teach in the field of Natural and Life Sciences Education, specifically focusing on Life Sciences as part of Intermediate Phase Education. Because tuition at the Wellington Campus is offered in Afrikaans, the ability to teach in Afrikaans is a firm requirement, alongside fluency in English. The role is central to preparing student teachers who will go on to teach Life Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Technology in the Intermediate Phase, and it carries a strong expectation of involvement in both teaching and research within the faculty.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree relevant to the teaching of a combination of Life Sciences and Natural Sciences and Technology, as well as the associated methodology in Intermediate, Senior, or FET Phase Education. A recognised teaching qualification relevant to Life Sciences and Natural Sciences and Technology Education is also required, and Natural and/or Life Sciences must have been a major subject at undergraduate level. The post requires either two years of relevant lecturing experience at tertiary level or five years of relevant teaching experience at school level. A relevant Doctoral degree, exposure to academic teaching methodology at tertiary level, competence in the pedagogy of technology integration, and evidence of research competence are listed as strong recommendations. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate sound content and pedagogical content knowledge, research skills, academic administration and development abilities, assessment and quality assurance expertise, good work ethics, and meticulous planning and time management.

The core duties include teaching Life Sciences and Natural Sciences and Technology, along with the methodology for the Intermediate Phase, including laboratory work and experiments. The role also involves curriculum development and the creation of learning materials, supervising students during teaching practice, and active participation in research through publications and student supervision. Academic administration, assessment, and quality assurance are integral parts of the position, as is providing learning support in multilingual classrooms. The post holder will be expected to mentor and support students and staff, work collaboratively within teams, network with schools and other professional networks, and adapt to hybrid teaching and learning models that combine face-to-face and online instruction. Additional functions may be assigned by the Head of Department.
