This permanent cleaner vacancy offers three posts within the Western Cape Department of Health, with placements at Grassy Park Community Day Centre and Vanguard Community Health Centre. The role is essential to maintaining a safe, hygienic and welcoming environment for patients, staff and visitors. As a cleaner, you will be part of the facility’s support team, reporting to the Facility Manager and working alongside colleagues to ensure that all areas of the facility meet the required standards of neatness and infection control. The positions are permanent, meaning successful candidates can expect ongoing employment with the associated service benefits, including a 13th cheque, employer contributions to a pension fund, and allowances for housing and medical aid.

To be considered, applicants need basic numeracy and literacy skills, which are the minimum educational requirements. In addition, candidates must demonstrate good interpersonal skills and excellent communication skills, as the role involves interacting with a range of people. A sound knowledge of the correct methods for handling and disposing of refuse and waste products is essential, along with a clear understanding of cleaning policies and practices. The inherent requirements of the job are physically demanding, so you must be able to perform tasks such as lifting, bending, and operating heavy duty cleaning and household equipment. You must also be willing and able to work shifts, including weekends and public holidays, and to rotate between day and night duty as operational needs dictate. Flexibility is important, as you may be required to move across various departments within the facility.

The key duties include general cleaning and maintenance across the facility. This involves sweeping, scrubbing, dusting, mopping, polishing, and the removal of refuse. You will also be responsible for cleaning hospital grounds, windows and walls. Beyond routine cleaning, you must ensure the effective and efficient utilisation and storage of cleaning materials and equipment, so that supplies are used correctly and kept in good condition. Adherence to safety precautions is a critical part of the role, and you must follow occupational health and safety policies at all times. You will help maintain a high standard of neatness and hygiene throughout the facility, directly contributing to infection prevention and patient comfort. Additionally, you are expected to provide effective cleaning support to the Facility Manager and colleagues, responding to operational requirements as they arise.

It is important to note that no payment of any kind is required when applying for this post, so applicants should be wary of any requests for money. Short-listed candidates may be subjected to a practical, written and oral assessment to verify their suitability for the role. This may include demonstrating cleaning techniques or answering questions about safety procedures. If you are physically fit, reliable, and committed to maintaining clean and safe health environments, this position offers a meaningful opportunity to contribute to public health services in the Western Cape.
