Iziko Museums of South Africa, an organisation dedicated to celebrating and preserving the nation’s diverse heritage, is seeking to appoint four Collections Assistants within its Collections and Digitisation Department. These are fixed-term contract positions lasting five months, with the possibility of extension depending on funding availability. The role is ideal for individuals who are detail-oriented, methodical, and passionate about working with natural history collections in a museum environment.
The primary purpose of the Collections Assistant is to support the Collections Managers in the day-to-day care, documentation, and movement of museum specimens and objects. This includes assisting with the maintenance of collection data, developing inventories, conducting stocktaking, and performing various clerical tasks that ensure accurate record-keeping. The role also involves physical handling of collection material, such as packing, unpacking, and moving specimens under supervision, as well as providing general assistance in storage areas. Cleaning of material both in storage and on display is another key responsibility, carried out under the guidance of the Collections Manager. Additionally, the assistant will help with the preparation, accessioning, and registration of new specimens and objects, contributing to the formal documentation and integration of items into the museum’s collections.
To be considered for this position, candidates must have at least Grade 12, a BSc qualification, or an equivalent qualification. An ideal candidate would hold a relevant three-year degree or diploma in a field related to natural history or museum studies. Proven experience working with natural history museum specimens or collections is essential, as is experience using the Specify database or a similar collections management database. Computer literacy in Microsoft 365 is required. While a valid driver’s licence is not a mandatory requirement, it may be advantageous for the performance of certain duties.
The successful incumbent will need to demonstrate a range of competencies including strong thinking skills, a sense of ownership over their work, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. Good communication, planning and organising abilities, and relationship-building skills are important. The role demands patience, endurance, integrity, stress tolerance, adaptability, and sound technical and professional knowledge. These attributes are essential for working in a heritage environment where careful handling and meticulous record-keeping are critical.
Iziko Museums is committed to being an equal opportunity employer and to developing a diverse workforce. In line with the Employment Equity Act, preference will be given to candidates who promote representivity within the organisation. Iziko also reserves the right not to fill the advertised positions. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and this will happen within two months of the closing date. Interested applicants should prepare a detailed CV with contactable referees and certified copies of their identity document and certificates, and submit their application as per the instructions in the advertisement. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build a career in museum collections management while contributing to the preservation of South Africa’s natural and cultural heritage.
