SENIOR VETERINARY NURSE: RADIOLOGY

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for:

• Taking radiographs on all species (small, large, exotic animals and wildlife);

• Performing, preparing and assisting with specialized procedures: CT scans, MRI scans, scintigraphy, contrast studies and ultrasound;

• Handling patients;

• Administering and monitoring sedation and assisting with monitoring of anaesthesia;

• Ensuring clinic hygiene, biosecurity and safety; 

• Clinic administration (record keeping, stock control, handling referrals, managing Picture Archiving Communication (PACS)/IT software, handling, etc.);

• Liaising with service providers to maintain and fix radiology equipment and machinery;

• Utilising PACS for storage and retrieval of images;

• Ensuring continuous practical training of veterinary and nursing students;

• Involvement in the formal practical training of veterinary nurses, including progress reporting and clinic assessments;

• Training new staff;

• After-hours emergency call-out services on a rotational basis;

• Performing relief duties in other sections in the OVAH; and

• Performing shift duties.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (DipCurAnim or Dip Vet Nursing) or BVetNurse or equivalent;

• Registration as a veterinary nurse with the South African Veterinary Council; and 

• Two years’ experience in veterinary nursing.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

• Knowledge of biosecurity measures and procedures and handling of all types of small animals;

• Meticulous about detail, professional and a responsible person;

• Appropriate language and communication skills;

• Organizing skills and a strong service orientation;

• Physical mobility;

• Ability to work under pressure and without supervision;

• Computer literacy; and

• Ability to work weekends and outside normal working hours when required for continuous service delivery in the hospital.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

• Previous and/or current experience of one year or more in a clinic environment taking radiographs; and

• Experience in CT and/or MRI scanning.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
