CHIEF PODIATRIST: GRADE 1

This position calls for an experienced and registered podiatrist to lead and coordinate podiatry services across a district within the Limpopo Department of Health. As Chief Podiatrist Grade 1, the successful candidate will be responsible for the full spectrum of service delivery, from managing inpatient and ambulatory care to driving outreach initiatives. The role is firmly grounded in the district’s community-based rehabilitation strategy, meaning the post holder must think beyond the clinic walls and ensure that podiatry services reach communities in an integrated, accessible manner. This includes planning and implementing prevention and health promotion campaigns, as well as ensuring that the district’s podiatry services are responsive to population needs.

The key responsibilities are broad and managerial in nature. The Chief Podiatrist will supervise junior staff and community service therapists, including conducting performance appraisals and providing professional guidance. Representation is also a core part of the role, as the incumbent will sit on district executive committee meetings for podiatry, coordinate monthly podiatry meetings and continuing professional development activities, and present quarterly reports at provincial forums. Operational duties include coordinating the procurement of consumables and assistive devices, conducting supervisory visits to all clinics, and managing the sub-district allocated to the post. The role also extends to contributing to district therapeutic planning, budgeting, monitoring and evaluation processes, ensuring proper utilisation of resources and equipment, and attending relevant meetings while assuming responsibilities of the Head of Department when delegated. Quality assurance implementation and monitoring across the district is a key accountability.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a podiatrist, and must currently be registered with the HPCSA in Independent Practice. A minimum of three years’ experience after registration in the relevant profession is required. Candidates must be South African citizens or permanent residents. A valid driver’s licence is required, except for applicants with disabilities, and there must be a willingness to work nights, weekends, public holidays, and shifts when necessary. Supervisory experience will be an added advantage. Computer literacy is essential, including MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms.

The ideal candidate will bring strong communication, report writing, decision-making, organisational, and expert clinical skills, along with research, analytical, presentation, human resource, and financial management abilities. This is a demanding but rewarding leadership role for a podiatrist who is ready to shape service delivery at district level, support staff development, and ensure high-quality, accountable podiatry care across the health system.
