OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST GRADE 1-3 [MENTAL HEALTH] – [CONTRACT UP TO 31ST MARCH 2027]

This vacancy is for an Occupational Therapist specialising in mental health, graded at Level 1, 2 or 3, within the Limpopo Department of Health. The position is a fixed-term contract, offering an opportunity to contribute to public mental health services. The successful candidate will be expected to deliver comprehensive occupational therapy services to mental health patients, functioning both independently and as an integral member of a multidisciplinary team. Applicants must possess an appropriate qualification that enables registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Occupational Therapist, along with current HPCSA registration. A valid driver’s licence is essential, and computer literacy is expected, including proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as virtual meeting platforms. The grade offered will be determined by the number of years of relevant experience after registration with the HPCSA: Grade 1 requires no prior experience, Grade 2 requires a minimum of ten years, and Grade 3 requires a minimum of twenty years. This experience should be directly relevant to occupational therapy practice.

The main duties include planning and implementing occupational therapy programmes for mental health service users, conducting individual and group therapy sessions, and contributing to the multidisciplinary team’s assessment and treatment planning. The therapist must maintain accurate patient records and uphold professional and ethical standards. Knowledge of the Public Finance Management Act and other public service acts, procedures and regulations is necessary to operate effectively within the government health system. Strong verbal and written communication skills are vital, as the role involves liaising with patients, families, colleagues and other stakeholders. Good interpersonal relations and teamwork are crucial, given the collaborative nature of mental health care.
