This multi-post vacancy advertises for Medical Officers to work on a shift system within the Limpopo Department of Health, with 227 positions available across a wide range of hospitals in the province. The posts are structured at three professional grades, allowing candidates at different stages of their medical careers to apply. Grade 1 posts are aimed at practitioners with less than five years of relevant post-registration experience, while Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years and Grade 3 requires at least ten years of experience after registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an independent medical practitioner. All applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that permits registration with the HPCSA and must already be registered as independent medical practitioners. In addition, candidates must be South African citizens or permanent residents.

The position offers an all-inclusive remuneration package aligned to the relevant grade, with a rural allowance that is payable depending on whether the specific hospital falls within an ISRDS node or the broader Public Service Coordinating Bargaining Council framework. Because this is a shift-based role, successful candidates must be willing and able to work flexi hours, including night duty, weekends and public holidays, and must be prepared to perform commuted overtime when operational needs require it, as approved by the Accounting Officer of the Department. The hospital network covered includes both larger referral centres and smaller rural facilities, with post allocations spread across institutions such as Pietersburg, Mankweng, Tshilidzini, Lebowakgomo, Kgapane, Mokopane and many others across Limpopo.

Day-to-day responsibilities include providing clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas; performing ward rounds and outreach programmes; responding to emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters; and delivering medical services at special events and operations across the province. Medical Officers must maintain best clinical practice in line with quality standards, participate in the Department’s Quality Improvement Programme, conduct clinical audits, ensure clinical protocols are followed, and generate accurate medical records. They are also expected to engage in continuing professional development and academic activities, and where required, to supervise, instruct and train Medical Officers and Registrars. Additional duties may be allocated by the supervisor without boundary restrictions, meaning flexibility and adaptability are essential.

Candidates need sound clinical knowledge covering general medical, surgical and anaesthetic care for all age groups and sexes at district health services level, as well as a working understanding of South African medical law, ethics and clinical governance. Strong leadership, communication, presentation and budgeting skills are required, along with the ability to work independently after hours, collect and analyse data, and use resources rationally. Computer literacy, including MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and virtual meeting platforms, is essential. A valid driver’s licence is required except for applicants with disabilities, and a skill declaration form must be attached to the application. Applicants should also note the inherent demands of shift work and the commitment required to serve in hospital settings across the province, including rural and under-resourced facilities. This represents a significant provincial recruitment drive for qualified medical professionals seeking stable public-sector employment in Limpopo.
