The Department of Health in Limpopo is advertising a large intake of Medical Officer posts, with 227 vacancies available on a shift-based system across numerous hospitals in the province. These positions are graded at three levels, allowing applications from medical practitioners with differing levels of post-registration experience. The roles are based at a broad network of district and regional hospitals, including tertiary and rural facilities, so successful candidates should be prepared for deployment where needed. The overarching purpose of the posts is to strengthen clinical service delivery, support emergency and routine medical care, and contribute to the department’s broader quality improvement and teaching responsibilities.

Applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and they must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. Grade 1 posts are suited to practitioners with less than five years of appropriate experience after registration. Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years of such experience, while Grade 3 requires at least ten years. Candidates must be South African citizens or permanent residents. The nature of the work demands a willingness and ability to work shifts and flexi hours, including night duty, weekends, and public holidays, as well as the capacity to perform overtime when operational needs arise. Commuted overtime may be approved by the department’s Accounting Officer on the flexi and shift system depending on service demands. Computer literacy is required, including MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms. A valid driver’s licence is also required, except where an applicant has a disability, and a skill declaration form must be submitted as part of the application process.

The ideal candidate will have sound knowledge and application of medical theory and practice, a thorough understanding of South African legal aspects relevant to medicine, and strong clinical skills in general medicine, surgery, and anaesthesia across all age groups and sexes at district health services level. Leadership, written and verbal communication, presentation, and budgeting skills are important, as is the ability to collect and analyse data. The post requires sound medical ethics, an understanding of clinical governance, the ability to work after hours independently without supervision, and the rational use of resources.

Key responsibilities include providing clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas, commensurate with the requirements for maintaining registration as a medical practitioner. Medical officers will perform ward rounds, participate in outreach programmes, and provide medical services at special events and operations across the province. They must respond to emergency calls within stipulated times, including disaster situations, and maintain best clinical practice through continuing professional development as required by the HPCSA. Accurate clinical records must be generated and maintained according to minimum standards. Officers will participate in departmental and hospital quality improvement programmes, ensure policies and procedures are followed, conduct clinical audits, and take part in continuing medical education and academic activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. They must also ensure clinical protocols are followed and may be required to coordinate, supervise, instruct, and train Medical Officers and Registrars in designated clinical areas. Additional duties may be allocated by supervisors without boundary restrictions, reflecting the need for flexibility and responsiveness across the provincial health system.
