This is a large-scale medical recruitment drive by the Limpopo Department of Health, advertising 227 Medical Officer posts under a shift system. The vacancies are spread across numerous hospitals in the province, from major regional centres like Pietersburg and Mankweng to smaller district hospitals such as Evuxakeni, Hayani, and Witpoort. The posts are graded according to the incumbent’s years of relevant experience as an independent medical practitioner, with Grade 1 for those with less than five years, Grade 2 for five to ten years, and Grade 3 for ten or more years. This is a clinical role focused on providing comprehensive medical care within a hospital setting, with a strong emphasis on emergency medicine, inpatient care, and after-hours service delivery.

To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and they must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that category. South African citizenship or permanent residency is required. The role demands a willingness to work shifts, including night duty, weekends, and public holidays, as well as the ability to perform commuted overtime based on operational needs. Computer literacy in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms is essential, along with a valid driver’s licence, unless the applicant has a disability. A skill declaration form must also be submitted as part of the application.

The ideal candidate will have sound clinical knowledge and skills across general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics, applicable to all age groups and both sexes at district health services level. They must understand the legal aspects of medical practice in South Africa, apply sound medical ethics, and demonstrate good leadership, communication, presentation, and budgeting skills. The ability to collect and analyse data, apply clinical governance principles, work independently after hours without supervision, and use resources rationally is also critical.

Key performance areas include providing clinical care, including emergency care, in designated areas; performing ward rounds and outreach programmes; responding to emergency calls and disaster situations within stipulated times; and maintaining best clinical practice through continuous professional development as required by the HPCSA. The successful candidate will generate and maintain accurate medical records, participate in the department’s quality improvement programme, conduct clinical audits, and ensure clinical protocols are followed. They may also be required to supervise, instruct, and train medical officers and registrars, and to perform any other duties allocated by a supervisor, without boundary restrictions.

The remuneration package is all-inclusive and graded, with an additional rural allowance of either 18% or 22% of basic salary, depending on whether the hospital is classified as an ISRDS node. Commuted overtime is not guaranteed but will be approved based on operational needs under the flexi/shift system. These posts offer a significant opportunity for medical professionals to contribute to public healthcare delivery across Limpopo’s hospital network, with clear recognition of experience through the grading structure.
