This large-scale recruitment drive seeks qualified medical practitioners to fill 227 Medical Officer posts on a shift system within the Limpopo Department of Health. The positions are distributed across dozens of hospitals in the province, ranging from major referral centres such as Pietersburg and Mankweng to smaller district and rural hospitals, and are structured into three grades based on recognised post-registration experience. Grade 1 posts are for independent practitioners with less than five years of experience, Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years, and Grade 3 requires at least ten years. Successful candidates will provide comprehensive clinical care at district health services level, including emergency management, ward rounds, outreach programmes, and medical support at special events and operations. They must be ready to respond to emergency calls, including disaster situations, and to work shifts, night duty, weekends, public holidays, and overtime as operational needs demand.
To be considered, applicants must hold a qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Independent Medical Practitioner and must currently be registered with the HPCSA. South African citizenship or permanent residency is required. The role demands sound clinical knowledge across medical, surgical, and anaesthetic disciplines for all age groups and sexes, as well as an understanding of South African medical law, clinical governance, medical ethics, and rational use of resources. Strong leadership, communication, presentation, budgeting, data collection and analysis skills are essential. Computer literacy, including MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms, is an inherent requirement, along with a valid driver's licence, unless the applicant has a disability. A skill declaration form must be submitted.
Key performance areas include performing ward rounds, providing clinical care in designated areas, maintaining best practice through continuing professional development, generating and maintaining accurate medical records, participating in quality improvement programmes, conducting clinical audits, and supporting undergraduate and postgraduate academic activities. Where required, the Medical Officer will coordinate clinical responsibilities, supervise, instruct, and train junior Medical Officers and Registrars. The post is an OSD-graded employed position with an all-inclusive remuneration package, and an additional rural allowance may apply at ISRDS nodes, plus commuted overtime approved by the Accounting Officer. These posts offer a significant opportunity for medical professionals to contribute to public health service delivery across Limpopo's hospitals.
