MEDICAL OFFICER: [SHIFTS] = [227] POSTS

This position offers qualified medical practitioners the opportunity to join the Limpopo Department of Health as a Medical Officer on a shift-based system, with a substantial number of posts available across numerous hospitals in the province. The role is an OSD-graded medical career opportunity, with vacancies spread across three grades depending on experience. The department is looking to fill 227 posts in total, with Grade 1 positions for less experienced doctors, Grade 2 for those with at least five years of post-registration experience, and Grade 3 for senior practitioners with a decade or more of experience. Successful candidates will be placed at one of many designated hospitals, including large regional facilities such as Pietersburg, Mankweng, Tshilidzini, and Lebowakgomo, as well as smaller district hospitals like Evuxakeni, Hayani, and Witpoort. The role is inherently operational and requires a willingness to work flexi hours, including night duty, weekends, and public holidays, with commuted overtime approved based on the operational needs of the department.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and they must currently be registered as such. The required experience levels are clearly stratified: Grade 1 is for those with less than five years of appropriate and recognisable experience after registration; Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years; and Grade 3 requires at least ten years. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents. The inherent requirements of the post also include computer literacy in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms, as well as a valid driver’s licence, except for people with disabilities. The ideal candidate will possess sound clinical knowledge and skills across general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics, applicable to all age groups and sexes at district health services level, as well as a strong understanding of medical law in South Africa, clinical governance, and medical ethics.

The key performance areas are broad and demanding. The Medical Officer will provide comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas, commensurate with the requirements for maintaining registration as a medical practitioner. Duties include performing ward rounds, conducting outreach programmes, and delivering medical services at special events and operations throughout the province. The officer must respond to emergency calls within stipulated times, including during disasters, and maintain best clinical practice through continuous professional development as required by the HPCSA. Generating and maintaining accurate clinical records is essential, as is participating in the department’s Quality Improvement Programme and ensuring adherence to policies and procedures. The role also involves conducting clinical audits, participating in continuing medical education and academic activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and ensuring clinical protocols are followed. Where required, the officer will coordinate clinical responsibilities, and supervise, instruct, and train Medical Officers and Registrars in designated clinical areas or disciplines. Additionally, the incumbent may be allocated any other duties by a supervisor within the province, without boundary restrictions.
