This position offers 227 posts for Medical Officers to join the Limpopo Department of Health, based at a wide network of hospitals across the province. The role is OSD-graded and structured into three experience-based levels, with successful candidates expected to deliver comprehensive medical services within a shift system. The context is one of district and regional hospital care, requiring flexibility to work nights, weekends, public holidays, and additional overtime as operational needs demand. The department has allocated posts across many centres, from large hospitals such as Pietersburg, Mankweng and Tshilidzini to smaller facilities like Voortrekker and Botlokwa, meaning appointees could be placed in urban or rural settings.

Applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. Experience determines the grade: Grade 1 requires less than five years of post-registration experience, Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years, and Grade 3 requires a minimum of ten years. Only South African citizens or permanent residents may apply. Inherent requirements include the willingness and ability to work shifts, flexi hours, night duty, weekends and public holidays, as well as performing overtime when needed. Computer literacy in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and virtual meeting platforms is essential, along with a valid driver’s licence unless the applicant has a disability. A skill declaration form must be attached with the application.

The key knowledge and skills expected of candidates include a sound understanding and application of medical theory and practice, knowledge of the legal aspects of medicine in South Africa, and solid clinical skills in general medical, surgical and anaesthetic care for all age groups and sexes at district health services level. Strong leadership, verbal and written communication, presentation and budgeting skills are also required, as are the ability to collect and analyse data, maintain sound medical ethics, understand and apply clinical governance, work independently after hours without supervision, and use resources rationally.

In terms of duties, the Medical Officer will provide clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas commensurate with maintaining registration as a medical practitioner. The role involves performing ward rounds, participating in outreach programmes, and delivering medical services at special events or operations across the province. The officer must respond to all emergency calls within stipulated times, including disaster situations, and maintain best clinical practice in line with quality standards through continuous professional development as required by the HPCSA. Generating and maintaining clinical records according to minimum standards is a key responsibility, as is participating in the department’s Quality Improvement Programme and ensuring policies and procedures are followed. Clinical audits, continuing medical education, and academic activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels form part of the role. Where required, the officer will coordinate clinical responsibilities, supervise, instruct and train Medical Officers and Registrars, and perform any other duties allocated by the supervisor without boundary restrictions. Commuted overtime is available where approved by the Accounting Officer based on the flexi or shift system and operational needs. This is a demanding but essential role for healthcare delivery across Limpopo, with a comprehensive all-inclusive remuneration package and, for certain posts, a rural allowance may apply.
