The Limpopo Department of Health is advertising a large intake of Medical Officer posts, with a total of 227 vacancies operating on a shift system across a wide range of hospitals in the province. These positions are open at three professional grades, and the grade offered to a successful candidate will depend on their years of relevant, recognisable experience after registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an independent medical practitioner. The posts are all-inclusive remuneration packages and some may qualify for a rural allowance depending on the location, with many of the hospitals situated in rural or underserved areas. This is an opportunity for both recently qualified medical officers and experienced practitioners to join the public health sector in Limpopo, serving communities across the province.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the HPCSA as an independent medical practitioner, and they must currently be registered as such. For entry at Grade 1, candidates need less than five years of appropriate experience after registration; Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years; and Grade 3 requires a minimum of ten years. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents. Because these are shift posts, the role demands a willingness and ability to work flexi hours, including night duty, weekends, and public holidays, as well as the capacity to perform overtime when operational needs arise. Commuted overtime will be approved by the Accounting Officer based on the flexi or shift system. Candidates must also be computer literate, including MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and familiar with virtual meeting platforms. A valid driver’s licence is required, except for people with disabilities, and a skill declaration form must be submitted with the application.

The role itself is broad and clinically demanding. Medical officers will provide comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas, consistent with the requirements for maintaining registration as a medical practitioner. They will perform ward rounds, take part in outreach programmes, and deliver medical services at special events and operations across the province. They must respond to emergency calls within stipulated times, including in disaster situations. Maintaining best clinical practice is central, and the post requires ongoing professional development through the HPCSA’s Continuing Professional Development system. Officers will generate and keep clinical records to the required standards, participate in the department’s and hospital’s quality improvement programmes, conduct clinical audits, and ensure that clinical protocols are followed. They may also be asked to coordinate clinical responsibilities, supervise, instruct and train other medical officers and registrars in one or more designated clinical areas or disciplines. Any other duties allocated by a supervisor in the province may be performed without boundary restrictions.

Candidates should possess sound clinical knowledge and skills across general medical, surgical and anaesthetic care for all age groups and sexes at district hospital level. They also need a good understanding of the legal aspects of medical practice in South Africa, medical ethics, and clinical governance. Leadership, communication, presentation and budgeting skills are important, as is the ability to collect and analyse data, work independently after hours without supervision, and use resources rationally. These vacancies are spread across dozens of hospitals, including major centres such as Pietersburg, Mankweng, Tshilidzini, Lebowakgomo, Kgapane, Mokopane, and many smaller facilities, meaning applicants should consider their preferred location when applying. The posts offer a chance to make a meaningful contribution to public healthcare in Limpopo while working within a structured, graded system that recognises experience and service.
