MEDICAL OFFICER: [SHIFTS] = [227] POSTS

The Limpopo Department of Health is advertising a large intake of Medical Officer posts under a shift system, with a total of 227 vacancies across a wide network of hospitals in the province. These positions are divided into three experience-based grades, with the majority of posts at Grade 1 level, followed by Grade 2 and Grade 3, and they are spread across numerous centres ranging from regional hospitals like Pietersburg, Mankweng and Tshilidzini to smaller district and rural hospitals such as Evuxakeni, Hayani and Witpoort. This is a substantial recruitment drive aimed at strengthening medical staffing in both urban and underserved areas, with posts placed in facilities across all districts of Limpopo.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and they must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. Experience requirements are tiered according to grade: for Grade 1, less than five years of appropriate post-registration experience; for Grade 2, a minimum of five years; and for Grade 3, a minimum of ten years. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents. The role demands a willingness to work shifts, flexible hours, night duty, weekends and public holidays, as well as the ability to perform overtime when required. Commuted overtime may be approved on a flexi or shift basis depending on operational needs. Other inherent requirements include computer literacy in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and virtual meeting platforms, a valid driver’s licence (with an exemption for people with disabilities), and the submission of a skill declaration form.

The successful candidates will be expected to provide comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, across designated clinical areas. They will perform ward rounds, participate in outreach programmes, and deliver medical services at special events, operations and during disasters or emergency responses. Maintaining best clinical practice is central to the role, including ongoing professional development through the HPCSA’s Continuing Professional Development system, and generating accurate medical records in line with required standards. Medical Officers will also contribute to the department’s quality improvement programmes, conduct clinical audits, ensure clinical protocols are followed, and take part in continuing medical education and academic activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Where required, they will coordinate clinical responsibilities, supervise and train junior Medical Officers and Registrars, and perform any other duties allocated by supervisors without boundary restrictions.

Candidates should possess sound clinical knowledge and skills across general medicine, surgery and anaesthetics for all age groups and sexes at district health services level, as well as a strong understanding of South African medical law and ethics. Leadership, communication, presentation and budgeting skills are important, along with the ability to collect and analyse data, work independently after hours, apply clinical governance principles, and use resources rationally. These posts offer an all-inclusive remuneration package commensurate with the relevant grade, with an additional rural allowance for those placed in ISRDS nodes.
