This large-scale recruitment drive seeks qualified medical practitioners to fill 227 Medical Officer posts under the shifts system across numerous public hospitals in Limpopo Province. The positions are spread across a wide range of facilities, from regional hospitals such as Pietersburg, Mankweng and Tshilidzini to smaller district hospitals, reflecting a provincial effort to strengthen clinical services in both urban and rural areas. Successful candidates will be appointed within a structured grading framework, with three levels determined by years of experience after registration as an independent medical practitioner. The role is well-suited to doctors who are comfortable working in a shift-based environment, including night duty, weekends and public holidays, and who are prepared to perform commuted overtime when operational needs require it. The department emphasises the importance of flexibility and a willingness to serve wherever needed, including outreach programmes and special events across the province.

Applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and they must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. For entry at the first grade, less than five years of relevant post-registration experience is required. The second grade demands at least five years, while the senior grade requires a minimum of ten years of appropriate experience after registration. Only South African citizens or permanent residents may apply. The inherent requirements of the post include computer literacy in MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as familiarity with virtual meeting platforms. A valid driver’s licence is required, except for applicants with disabilities. A skill declaration form must be attached to the application. The department is looking for candidates with sound clinical knowledge and skills in general medicine, surgery and anaesthetics, applicable to all age groups and sexes at district health services level, together with a strong understanding of the legal aspects of medical practice in South Africa.

The core duties involve providing comprehensive clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas while maintaining the standards required for registration as a medical practitioner. This includes performing ward rounds, conducting outreach programmes, and responding to emergency calls within stipulated timeframes, including in disaster situations. Medical officers must ensure that clinical records are generated and maintained to minimum standards, participate in the department’s quality improvement programmes, conduct clinical audits, and follow clinical protocols across their areas of work. Ongoing professional development is mandatory through the HPCSA’s Continuing Professional Development system. Where required, the post involves supervising, instructing and training junior medical officers and registrars, as well as participating in undergraduate and postgraduate academic activities. Additional duties may be allocated by supervisors, and candidates must be able to work after hours independently and without supervision, using resources rationally and demonstrating sound medical ethics and leadership. The department also values good communication, presentation and budgeting skills, along with the ability to collect and analyse data. These posts offer an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in public healthcare within Limpopo, with a remuneration package that includes an all-inclusive salary and, for certain nodes, a rural allowance.
