This large-scale recruitment drive by the Limpopo Department of Health seeks to fill 227 Medical Officer posts on a shift system, with vacancies distributed across a wide network of hospitals throughout the province. Appointed as independent medical practitioners within the district health services, successful candidates will form part of an OSD-graded structure allowing appointment at Grade 1, Grade 2, or Grade 3 level depending on their years of relevant experience post-registration. The roles are demanding and require clinicians who are adaptable, willing to work flexi-hours including night duty, weekends, and public holidays, and ready to perform commuted overtime when operational needs arise, as approved by the department’s Accounting Officer.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Independent Medical Practitioner, and must currently be registered with the HPCSA in that capacity. Experience thresholds determine the entry grade: Grade 1 is for practitioners with less than five years of appropriate post-registration experience, Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years, and Grade 3 requires at least ten years. Candidates must be South African citizens or permanent residents animated. A valid driver’s licence is required unless the applicant has a disability, and a skill declaration form must be submitted with the application. Computer literacy in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms is an inherent requirement, reflecting the modern administrative and communication demands of the post.

The successful incumbent will need a comprehensive skill set that includes sound clinical knowledge across general medicine, surgery, and anaesthetics for all age groups and sexes at district hospital level. A solid grounding in the legal aspects of South African medical practice, sound medical ethics, clinical governance principles, and the rational use of resources is expected. Leadership, verbal and written communication, presentation, and budgeting skills are also required, along with the ability to collect and analyse clinical data implicated in quality improvement.

In terms of core duties, the Medical Officer will provide clinical care, including emergency care, in designated clinical areas and will perform ward rounds and outreach programmes. The role calls for responding to all emergency calls within stipulated timeframes, including during disasters or mass casualty events, and for working independently after hours without supervision. Maintaining best clinical practice through continuous professional development is mandatory, as is generating and keeping clinical records that meet minimum standards. The officer will participate in the department’s quality improvement programmes, conduct clinical audits, ensure adherence to clinical protocols, and contribute to continuing medical education and academic activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Where required, the officer will supervise, instruct, and train Medical Officers and Registrars in designated disciplines. The post also entails performing any other duties allocated by supervisors without boundary restrictions across the provincechers. Applicants should note the all-inclusive remuneration package is supplemented by a rural allowance for qualifying nodes, and that shift work and overtime are integral to the functioning of these hospital-based posts.
